Not sure why the exact type of fanfic they write, or which cons they attended, would be relevant to that.

It's possible for people have a link between their fandom stuff and RL stuff that you can find it - in fact, unless someone specifically avoids it, it's probably just going to take some digging to do it particularly given the amount of information a lot of people will let slip online.
Also - learning to do something from somewhere =/= using it like that all the time. [And no, before the assumption is made, I have never done it outside of work because...well. It's creepy as fuck.]
