INTERNET DETECTIVES ASSEMBLE

(Anonymous) 2015-04-14 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. I pasted this into Paint.NET and messed with the brightness/contrast, then the magic wand to differentiate between two slightly different blacks (hey, I've been around the internet a bit), and there appears to be a message... in kanji. In fact, in two layers of different-sized kanji and kana layered on top of each other, some cropped? Or maybe my image editing fu is just terrible. Passing this off to someone else.

The best I can do: http://i.imgur.com/HYrstZE.png

My best guess right now is "translating fic and posting it as their own."

...Or possibly "deliberate incomprehensibility posing as mysterious art."

Now that you've pointed out they're there, I can see them on the secret itself. Lines running down each upright border? Shame I can't read kanji, though.

Just wait until ariakas gets up. She'll be able to tell us exactly what it says.

I can read Japanese and I still can't make out a single fucking thing that says.

Well, I can make out このように and something that looks like あたうで and both tell me shit in terms of actual meaning.

Same. Sometimes they don't even look like real Kanji, even taking the image quality into account.

Oh, I think they're all legit characters but overall yeah. I think OP pasted a bunch of a gibberish.

There seems to be an under layer of hirigana/kanji that might have been something (though I doubt it). But then there are the larger, stylized blocks pasted over them which are ONLY kanji. Which makes me assume that OP grabbed a calligraphy brush or jpg and then just slapped it in with no further thought.

I think it looks a lot like several encyclopedia entry snippets pasted over each other, with the brackets on the upper right side and all.

Kanji makes me think of using gratuitous weeb Japanese in every other line.

Is that still the heinous crime it was a few years ago?

okay i don't even care whether or not it's gibberish

that is the coolest thing

op cared enough to put it in there and I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IT MEANS

thread OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've been messing around with it some more, and I just cannot make the quality any better with my skill level and/or Paint.NET. It's possible the edges of the lettering are getting erased along with the background, the way I'm doing it? But it also looks like the original image might have been cropped incorrectly, given how the larger letters seem to be halved on the left side, and maybe secret OP accidentally put two layers of text without realizing?

I dunno. Anyone else is welcome to have a go with Photoshop or something.

(Or maybe the whole point is to distract us with a fake riddle while OP robs banks across town.)

At that image size and resolution, there's really not much more that can be done than you've already tried. The overlapping text doesn't help, because when you try cleaning it up and zooming in, all you're getting is a mess of pixels. There are parts of the larger kanji that stay readable, but not enough for me at least to read them.

It's not your fault OP, I'm used to using godawful Japanese fonts and even I am having a hell of a time. The kanji are just too small, the resolution too low, and the overlapping layers of text does not help at all.

You have worked hard, but my Japanese skills aren't enough to hack it. :( Maybe if a native/better speaker than I pops up?

*awards Internets* I never would've thought of using that trick to see if the picture had hidden elements.

10/10 Brilliant troll

You got us good, OP.

Late, myself, but I'm pretty sure the larger kanji are actually classical chinese/kanbun. I recognize the grammaticl structure, but I can't make out the characters, because bad image quality and poor imagination :-P
