Not if that's what your basing the friendship on, it's not.

Maybe your mileage varies, but if someone starts off what they intend to be a true friendship with me by withholding something as trivial as their age, it only makes me wonder what actually important things they 'forgot' to mention.

Many people are uncomfortable or ashamed with admitting their age and might need long time till they say it, you know.

Trivial to you, not at all to someone who is very private and reserved.

If knowing someone's age is that important to you, it's up to you to tell people that it is. Not everyone thinks it's that important, at least not important enough that it must be disclosed right away.
