I work as a city/county planner. Not a bad job, but I'm learning to hate community partners. Their goal is not to improve the community but to lock other groups out of discussions and massage their own fucking egos.

Still crushing the desperate hopes of desperate people and praying for the end of days (or at least a politician willing to raise taxes).

That sounds like my dream job. What exactly do you do?

It isn't as fun as it sounds.

I'm really gonna miss this job if I can't find a position in another department. There are no available positions at a higher salary in my department, and I can't pay back my college loans on $8 an hour.
fingalsanteater: (Default)

what do I do?

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2015-04-15 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
everything you've ever hated, probably.

Cake Decorator. Teacher's Assistant.

Jobs that everyone but me seems to want. I know, I know, I'm lucky to have one job, let alone two.

Previously I have been a telemarketer (a damn good one), phone support for AT&T wireless, a professional cleaner, a deli counter guy, and an ESL teacher.

Still doing the same thing. Boring but at least I can listen to podcasts. Started an audiobook club at work!

At my night job I was taking advantage of the naturally spooky ambiance of an abandoned mega grocery store with sporadic fluorescent lighting and listening to H.P. Lovecraft and whatever creepy/horrific stuff I could find. I did this off and on for about a month until my manager scheduled another employee to come in three hours early.

Sometimes just remembering the level of that fright makes my heart pick up.

I'd love to be able to do that. I listen to Nosleep podcast but have not listened to any great horror audiobooks. D:

Had a new guy join which is always pretty good, but means that I'm going to need to invest a lot of time into him (it's like six months until the training wheels come off), and I'm going to need to pass a lot of my numbers off to him.

On the otherhand, we're losing our most experienced guy for a couple months. Which leaves me as the veteran. Going to be a weird experience being the guy everyone goes to when the line managers not around.

However, a really helpful attachment career wise has come up (very back office project planning). And it turns out the guy recruiting is my old line manager.

Is it weird that I'm in my mid twenties but have never had an actual job?

Throughout high school, I never worked because I had a MUCH younger sibling and it would have been more expensive/annoying for my parents to hire a sitter so that I could get a job.

In college, I didn't work, but I did volunteer in lab (which got me a 20K scholarship along with almost 15K in summer funding). But it wasn't a job.

Now I'm in grad school and live off a stipend.

But I've never had an actual JOB.

Sounds like you have an awesome resume already then :) So long as you can prove that you're a good person to work with, then I doubt a lack of a job job will set you back.

p.s. I'm working for my bachelors degree in biology so I can do research, and I'm totally not jealous... :(

As for my own job situation, I'm currently unemployed. \(^^)/

Currently a barista. It's probably the only job I'll have where I can be a cold snarker to a customer, look them in the eye while I hand them a latte with a ironically poured heart in it, and they love this apparent experience so much they keep tipping me. I'm generally sweet and warm as fuck most of the time, especially to my favourite regulars, but it's nice to know I can be tired of people for a day and still get all the A+ marks.

though i'm starting an overnights job soon that at least pays me a livable wage

Second interview for a position coming up. Current management has downshifted from actively psychotic to passively psychotic.

I spent 11.5 hours at work today due to a number of factors. that was after 1 hour of sleep, 3 hours of homework in the morning and then 2 hours of class. And I have a hearing tomorrow morning that I'm doing part of the arguments for.

I want to curl up in a ball and never come out of bed.

Just started a new job (five days in, yay!)

Hopefully I'll get through the three-month trial and I'll get the job, so wish me luck!

eta: And now that I have some off time to talk about it (and no one is around to hear... I feel like talking inside an empty box). You know when one of your superiors starts taking work from you and you just knowwww you're not even gonna last a month in your newly acquired job, so you'll have to conform yourself with a worse and more stressing job knowing that your life will never improve and everything will forever remain hopeless?

That's how I feel right now.
