most books/shows/movies that fandom gloms onto aren't about food or argyle socks. they do, however, usually involve a focus on (or at least elements of) interpersonal relationships. romance and sex may not be human needs, but they are extremely common human wants, and the kind of human who wants them often wants them so keenly that they see it as a need. it's unfortunate for people like shippers-ruin-everything!anon, but it's unsurprising that shippers get so caught up in the interpersonal relationship aspect of their fandom.
