Tumblr bites.

+1

I'm about to buy my first ever Mass Effect game. Humble Bundle's doing a sale including Dragon Age as well. I await the responses here to see if there's a decent fandom anywhere that I can join once I've played.

I feel very much the same. I wish the LJ community would come back to life. People were nice there.

The fandom is shit no matter where you go. This goes for all Bioware games.

I'm apparently the only person (here, obviously the forum is full of people) who actually enjoys BSN...

Not that I've been in the Mass Effect section for years, but I've recently been visiting the Dragon Age one and will probably go back to the Mass Effect side when the next game is released.

Is the ME reddit really that bad? (Again, I'm liking the DA one right now but haven't visited the ME one for awhile. I would think they would be similar.)

When the next Mass Effect game is released the fandom will blow up again. If the fandom will be good or not is a matter of personal taste, but I find that if nothing else, BioWare fandom writes a lot of fic and draws a lot of art (which is perfect for me; I'm easily satisfied I suppose).

Not that I wouldn't appreciate a comm!

Do you come up against much homophobia or sexism on BSN? I feel like every time I go there I find someone saying something nasty and sometimes I just don't have the energy to put those posts out of my mind and focus on the good parts.

Well... I can't say I never run into it (it is after all a big site with a lot of different users; it isn't possible for all of them to be great) but to me it seems like when someone does act like an ass, there's usually someone around to call them on it. So I appreciate that when people are mean or offensive it doesn't go unnoticed.

There's some legitimately cool discussion over there (analysis of the ending, elven translations, speculation on a certain someone's fate) if you look for it, but there's also a lot of crap, some of which can be (understandably) frustrating. I think I've just reached a point in my Internet life where I feel like I've seen all this before and most of it doesn't phase me.

Which isn't to say you should give it another try, just that I have an easier time ignoring the bullshit by now.

I've been wanting to try to play the games/get into the fandom, since a friend of mine is a huge Bioware fan since 2013ish and I wanted to hop along the bandwagon with him (mainly because I don't want to feel left out when he's gushing about ME/Bioware in general), but the fandom on Tumblr really bites. It's sad, because Mass Effect looks so pretty and from what I was told, has a very strong storyline for the games themselves with good characters plus handsome men such as Kaidan, Cortez and Male Shep, but I'm getting too ahead of myself *ahem*.

I really wish the video game fandom in general on Livejournal would come back to life, but that's going to be unlikely in the foreseeable future. Yeah, there were some bad apples here and there (but that's the nature of the internet it seems, as not only you've found them on LJ, but on Tumblr too, as many LJ members moved there since the stupid LJ changes 5 years ago), but a lot of them were nice (especially those I've meet from other video game fandoms, such as Uncharted, Resident Evil, Pokemon and Bioshock being examples).

I hope someday, like OP, I want to find fandom people to talk to that are nice and help me take a step to the right direction, as I want to really start this series and get back to playing console games and not just handhelds like Legend of Zelda OoT/MM 3DS and Fire Emblem: Awakening.

The games are so great. I hope the fandom doesn't turn you off playing them.

Mass Effect has been the best gaming experience ever for me, the mshep/Kaidan romance is incredible, and because you are Commander Shepard for 3 games, you grow with the characters and it almost feels like a family. It's an emotional ride. There are places on Tumblr where the fandom is normal, I don't know about reddit or LJ, but if you find the right people on Tumblr you can have a very nice fandom experience as well.

I agree, I must be following the right sort of people on tumblr as my experience has been pretty great so far, and not awful at all. The only time I ever see asshole posts is occasionally when I search the tags.

I adore the entire series and don't really pay attention to the fandom. They are absolutely worth playing on their own merits. :) Plus if you want to talk about them you can always do so here - there are several ME fans on F!S who like to talk about the games!

Dreamwidth. Why not?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Is there much Mass Effect stuff on Dreamwidth? If the fandom is nice here I might start using this site for more than f!s and actually log in once in a while.

Sry, IDK.

[Bioware Forum Logo] Awful

[cartoon drawing with red eyes] slightly less awful, but still awful

[Livejournal logo] was pretty good, but dead now

[Tumblr logo] either awful or so cliquey I don’t feel I can join in

I just want to make some friends in this fandom

The red-eyed robot is a Reddit logo, if I'm not mistaken.

We're currently just super quiet right now over on LJ. Once more intel on the new game becomes available, things will pick up again. If you have art, fic, theories, or anything to share go ahead and make a post! People will comment.

Just be wary of Itches. Her sarcasm/humor can be acerbic at times.
