I never actually went and posted anything pornographic, but yeah, I totall get how having teens read it would make me somewhat uncomfortable if i did.

Yeah. I've been in fandom off and on since I was a very young teenager, and I always thought old people were being ridiculous when they said it made them uncomfortable to have such young people reading their explicit fics. The older I get, the more I understand their concerns. It's part of why I'm a lot less prolific than I used to be.

Does anyone still use the term "lemon"? When I was breaking into online fandom 10+ years ago, it seemed like that was an older term (dating back to zines?)/used by an older set of fans, and perhaps on its way out.

Would a 19 year old tumblr-ite even know what it means?

When I was breaking into fandom I didn't get the impression that it was old but that it was generally more common to anime fandoms.

*raises hand* I do! Then again, I'm in an "older" anime fandom whose canon ended five-ish years ago. The term "lemon" came from anime fandom (derived from the first big pornographic animated series in Japan called "Cream Lemon").

I'm 24. I saw it used a bit when I first got into fandom, like 4-5ish years ago, but since I don't read much porn I can't really say how prevalent it is/was even in the spaces I hung out in.

Actually, knowing there are kids reading my smutfic is the reason I take time to do things like explain about safe sex and talking about if the characters have been tested for disease, taking time to explain proper foreplay, saying again and again "DO NOT USE THINGS THAT ARE NOT LUBE AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR LUBE FOR GOD'S SAKE".

Look, I got half my sex ed from fic when I was a young teen.

The least I can do is make sure someone else has a halfway decent chance at learning something too.

Honestly, it's not that I'm skeeved about underage readers of my fic. There's a reason why I don't post on AFF.net. I know they're covering their butts, but seriously?

The thing I get nervous about is their parents. I don't want to have to field an irate parent's complaints that "I'm corrupting a minor" or somesuch rot. So I try and post where it's easy for a youngster to fake their age, so if a parent tries that route, I can say "hey, it's posted to an 18+ site. How am I supposed to know your kid wasn't of age?".

Text: I feel halfway guilty about how much smutfic I read as a young teen.

Don’t get me wrong, I had fun. But as I got older, I started to understand why all those fuddy-duddy ficthors got skeeved at the idea of kids reading their lemons.

I think the majority of comments I get on my porn are all from kids under 18. I couldn't give less of a fuck, honestly. I was definitely reading/watching porn by the time I was 15 and at least it was a lot more of a human introduction to read fanfic or see someone's art than it was to look a Silicone Valley style professional porn where nobody seems to be enjoying themselves. Even better, that fic introduced me to the concepts of consent, safe play, and other vital things that sex education and other porn just glossed over or totally left out.

It's also nice to know that what I write provides an example of sexuality that isn't heteronormative romance crap, and might make someone feel like their kinks/preferences are acceptable and not something to be ashamed of.

tl;dr let the kids have their fic. Teenagers are developing their sexuality and it's past time to stop pretending that the best way to deal with it is to sweep it under the rug and hope they keep those vows of chastity.
