This might be a case of overthinking it:

- they need it to rhyme/fit into the melody.

- it could be non-literal, as in turning back and starting over in the relationship

- it's not a commentary on the (im)possibility of time travel;

Eh, given how much scientific discussion there is on time travel, particle physics, dimensional folding, etc, I'm not sure it's been definitively proven to be impossible. Doubly so twenty years ago.

Also, it's a pop song, yo. If you want to complain about impossibilities, yell at Brian for back handsprining for a whole minute in the Backstreets Back video and not passing out. Or "Does his gifts come from the heart?" Christ, that grammar.

Pretty much this. I loved BSB (still do!) but damn did they have some terrible grammar in their songs.

Turning back time doesn’t “seem” impossible, it actually is impossible! Unless you mean the fact of wishing is what seems impossible, which is silly, because people wish all sorts of weird things.
