so... what is it about? ok, it's a teaser, but it seems such a blatant, cheap set up of the two lines of "you (the audience heheh winkwonk ;) ) have the force"
and "we're home" from old characters.

there's a women and a black dude, which I approve of, but you really must be invested to get hyped by that.

I have no concept of joy and any childhood wonder has been weaned out of me. I do however understand that I'm supposed to be happy that there's a woman and a black dude even if I think the media in question is complete crap, so I'm going to comment on that so I look good. Why am I on fandom secrets? Why do people ever get hype? I'm going to go back to kicking children's lego houses. They look kind of excited and they need to LEARN BETTER

you have a weird inner monologue.

but yeah, why don't you make me understand. I was never blessed with Star Wars in my childhood, so I have no soul and can only see the most blatant, cheap hooks of those two lines.

did it have any new info that makes you excited? was it the music?

Look, a lot of us grew up with this stuff. We've also been following the casting and backstage process, so the trailer isn't the first thing we've seen.

This is like you've grown up with Sailor Moon, and found out the new Sailor Moon teaser looks good, so you're excited and want to talk about it with other people who've grown up with Sailor Moon. It's probably going to look incredibly silly to people who didn't grow up with it, but the teaser isn't for them. It's for people who already like Sailor Moon.

You're like, "what's this shitty music? Why is she spinning around?" They're like "LOOK HOW AWESOME HER TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCE IS WAIT IS THAT TUXEDO MASK IN THE BACKGROUND"

Now add a couple orders of magnitude to that. All those "cheap hooks" you talk about? Star Wars is the franchise that invented them. It changed cinema dramatically. You can argue whether or not it changed it for the better, but it had a huge impact.

So what you have here is a bunch of different interest groups intersecting. You have people who saw it in the seventies and eighties. You have people like me, who saw it when they were kids and it was rereleased into theaters. You have people who came in for the sequels. You have fans of the books or the cartoons. This includes fandom geek types, but also normal people. They're really excited about this silly thing. If you're outside you probably won't get it, but that's okay. Again, it isn't for you. It's for this huge other group.

But yes, I'm terribly sorry I made fun of you. I forgot this was serious business.

thanks for explaining it with specific Sailor Moon examples.
That made me understand what makes this trailer so special to you, aside from the broadest terms of cultural impact.
Not. At least not for this trailer.

If this is not the first thing you've seen about it- if it's just another thread to discuss, hey, ok. but half the thread is screaming Okay NOW I'm sold!!! I can wonder what the trailer is about, aside from the "hooks".

At least further down the thread somebody says the guy narrating is Luke and there's some speculation about the content. Should have waited for that.

yes. the whole /italic lego crunching kids bullying no childhood joy/ paragraph felt shitty, hyperbole or not. you couldn't know that, though.

I'm sorry. I didn't know I was dealing with a connoisseur.

Uh, I thought that was a blatant setup for it being someone related to Luke having the force. Unless he was talking about the black guy, but last I knew Mace Windu was also a thing.

I'm going to assume that there are force capable black guys in universe that aren't related to Mace Windu, even if he is Sam Jackson and thus unnaturally virile

Re: STAR WARS

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wasn't implying he was related to Mace Windu. I meant black Jedis are already canon, so another black guy having the force isn't coming out of nowhere.

yeah, but didn't they already say it was next generation? no more info.

My bet would be the girl is Luke's daughter.

Re: STAR WARS

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

Either that, or maybe Han & Leia's kids? Didn't they have three kids in the books who were Jedi?

Re: STAR WARS

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
They said the books were no longer canon. So no Mara and stuff.

In the books, yes.
