I think even if I could spend as much time and money on fandom as I wanted, I still wouldn't produce more fanwork, participate more in fandom, or just all-out indulge as a lurker.

Because I feel vulnerable when I don't restrain the extent I feel and express liking for things.

The washed out bit on the top says - but I'm not a vulcan.

I was going to say that's what fandom's for, but then I thought about it, and unfortunately I have been in a few where enthusiasm beyond "I wrote a fic" or "that episode was good" was ignored. (One person asked me why I'd want to discuss the show. Uh, it's a fan comm?) So if that's the fandoms you're in... well, maybe try finding ones where enthusiasm is allowed the way fandom's are supposed to be enthusiastic?

Eh, I think I'm just not that prolific - but i'm the opposite from you, I think. I feel like fandom makes me less vulnerable.

Yeah, same. IRL people generally like things very, very casually (unless it's something "socially acceptable" to be obsessed with, like sports). This isn't a bad thing, it just makes it awkward sometimes when you want to unleash ALL THE LOVE and the other person just stares at you.

I know how that feels. I often feel guilty for enjoying things because I irrationally feel like I don't deserve to. It's not fun. I hope you can overcome it.

I detect some emotional repression here. I mean I wouldn't call lurking 'indulging'. Fandom is not an obscure shameful hobby, imho.

I agree.

I think the OP knows they're repressing their emotions and restricting something they enjoy, but it makes them feel more in control.

I've come across this attitude before. It always saddens me. I don't think it gives the person the result they desire. Restricting something unnaturally just makes you crave it more and feel even more out of control.

I know someone who consumes media and fic in their favorite fandom slowly so that they always have something left. However I don't know anyone who restricts their involvement in fandom on purpose because it makes the uncomfortable. It makes sense that it only increases feeling of being out of control, yeah.

Well...whatever works for you? You can be in fandom as much or as little as you want (and there's no wrong way to do it), but what I enjoy most about fandom is the enthusiasm people feel about their interests.

Having three hour long conversations about gaming is fun!

Same...

....Did you mean to have "But I'm not a Vulcan" on the top of your post it?

OP

Yeah, I added it in Photoshop. Sticky Notes doesn't let you do that, but I wish it did.
