nope, sorry, but he still sucks

maybe if he wasn't the most unpleasant, whiny, petulant person in the entire universe, i would be more amenable to your arguments

This is what is also known as a teenager. They grow out of it -- if they get a chance to grow up.

well, (a), I would say that, even if you can explain his insane petulance, that doesn't make him a pleasant or likable character

and (b), i don't think that explains his petulance, at least not all of it. some of it, surely, but it's kind of extreme how much that's a note of his character.

At the time, I hated Adric for being whiny and useless. In retrospect, he was whiny and useless but he was also just a little kid. Now that I'm an adult I can't really hate on a little kid. But when I was a kid, wow, yes, he was awful, especially as he was supposed to be some kind of wish fulfillment "kid in the TARDIS" character. I wanted to be Nyssa!

anon from above

I mean, I don't hate him as a person, but I don't think the fact that he was a kid excuses him being a bad character at all

like, sure, him being a kid excuses him being whiny and useless, but it doesn't answer the question why a whiny useless kid should have been on the show

he was a bad character

I like him too. And there are popular characters in some of my other fandoms that he reminds me a lot of, so I never really understood the hate.

He's like Wesley Crusher, who I liked as a kid (I only encountered Star Trek fandom once I'd grown up, and was baffled by the hatred. Then I rewatched TNG, and while I still retained some affection for him, I could see why fandom found him really annoying). And Wil Wheaton, while not a great actor, is better than Matthew Waterhouse, so....

I think Adric's reputation problem comes from his character's personality and acting performance, not his skillset/abilities. Although SF fans are frequently biased against allegedly hyper-competent child prodigies (who really do fail more often than not, because the adults are the MAIN characters and must save the day).

Adric had moments. I tolerate him pretty well in his Fourth Doctor stories, especially Meglos (such cheese! and Romana being great) and Logopolis. And Earthshock is pretty good. Once you watch it in context of Five's arc, it does come across as a moving sacrifice, and you don't really cheer his demise. Although that is me speaking at 30+ years removed from air date (ie, I didn't watch it when it was fresh and new).

Um, Adric wasn't in Meglos, he didn't join the show until the next story.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if he'd sacrificed his life during Meglos he'd be better loved. Adric, because someone has to make Mel look good.

It would have been very, very difficult for Adric to sacrifice himself in Meglos because that's the story before the one when he first appears.

I am one of those of the belief that fans dislike Adric because we know he's just like us.

Yes. That's the joke. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xECUrlnXCqk

Mel looks good all by herself. I love her positivity.

Aw, I like him too. :)

It's ok. I mean I don't like him but liking him is a valid option.
If someone submited a secret that they hated Adrik whould it be accepted?

You are not alone OP. He was my imaginary invisible friend when I was a tiny (I refused to believe he was imaginary, it was just that no one else could see him)

Earthshock still makes me misty, even more than 20 years later.
and yes, I did use this RP journal on purpose, for reasons that should be obvious

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
This was a kid's show and there should be characters that kids can identify with and enjoy! I'm not in fandom but I'm sure not everybody hates him even if they first saw him as an adult. I don't like it when people hate on characters so I sympathize OP. :)

Text: I LIKE ADRIC

and I think Whovians have been completely mean about him for decades.

He’s intelligent, he’s resourceful, and he sacrifices his life.

I cried when he died.

shut up, I was 8.

I like Adric, too. I think he seemed more suited to Tom Baker's Doctor rather than Peter Davison's, they seemed to mesh better, and I also think, being young and immature, he suffered from Five's crowded TARDIS, and would have benefited from being able to obtain more of the Doctor's focus. Plus, he and Tegan were never going to do anything but bring out the worst in each other.

His death scene was well-done, I think regardless of your personal feelings towards him, it was an affecting moment.

As a friend of mine once put it, "It's not so much that I want to spank Adric as that I can't believe everyone isn't constantly spanking him."

I had been hearing about how Adric sucks long before I got around to seeing an episode with him in it (at an age when I'd be abe to remember, at least, since I probably saw some of his episodes close to their original airing - we lived in Australia in the early 80s but I was very little). By the time I actually watched a few Adric episodes in my early 20s I thought "Meh, he's not that bad. I don't particularly love him, but I don't see why people hate him so much."

I can understand the reaction a little, actually, assuming Wesley Crusher works as a parallel. I both idolized Wesley a bit and thought he was cute, but also found him an annoying distraction from the adults who were supposed to be the main characters. I could see why some people outright hated him, so I guess I can see it for Adric, too. I just tend to cut Adric more slack since Wesley lived on a starship full of people with formal academy training who worked under a clear chain of command while Adric traveled with some dude in a magic police box.

I'm also pro-Adric, though only as a Fourth Doctor companion. It was a good idea to give Four a young, vulnerable character to hang around with after two seasons of Romana/K-9 and after getting more dark and godlike. The chemistry is better (even knowing the actors loathed each other) - though I'm not sure how much of that is actual chemistry and just down to Tom's ability to sling his charisma at anything up to and including immobile seated people in full latex masks and fibreglass boxes with wheels. Matthew's performance is horrible, but Tom has said it wasn't a lot worse than most Doctor Who acting, and Who fandom lets off some companion performances that are almost as bad.
