"I love you, but..."

What are some cringeworthy things people you otherwise respect think/say?

My dad is vaguely racist. Like, his best friend is black but he uses the N-word. Then again, he uses the N-word towards white people too.

...I was going to reply to this, but then I realized that she no longer fits into the "people I respect at all" category.

My father is legitimately a genius, and his work has been stunning, but the way he buys into corporate greenwashing makes me facepalm.

Generally hypocrisy. I've known people who have the capacity to be awesome, who care about important things, but only make the slightest effort to act like decent human beings if they're going to be observed. Otherwise they're cowardly liars who are going to do whatever will make their brain/ego/crotch happy regardless of the needs of others.

It's all about looking like good people, not actually being good people. Being good is a constant process and requires actual effort. The saddest thing is that I doubt they see a difference. It's so easy to find excuses for yourself and surround yourself with people who will accept those excuses.

Hey, this sounds like two of my ex-friends. And that's pretty much the reason why they're EX-friends now.

I had a boss who was a complete Michael Scott with the racist jokes. And homophobic comments, but unfortunately those were more intentionally nasty -she once made fun of a church for being pro-gay marriage, not knowing I'm very pro-gay marriage myself. (I don't think she had any idea I'm liberal.)

A board member of my company (who I truly, genuinely respect) buys into all sorts of hooey news stories, I think because he doesn't really have the time to do research. So he just believes crap his friends send him. He did a stint as a 9/11 truther, to give you an idea...

My sister is a hardcore believer in "all opinions are valid," even when I tell her some opinions are factually wrong. To which she usually says: "Yes, well, that's your opinion."

I want to strangle her sometimes.

My boyfriend is a huge conspiracy theorist. He doesn't believe we landed on the moon. He's also a creationist who thinks humans might have created dinosaurs.

I love him very dearly. I also love it that we've learned how to avoid these topics.

Why would you marry someone like that? Does it make you feel smart or something?

Neither of us want to get married (we've got three ex-spouses between us) and he's actually plenty smart. There's just a few areas that we don't talk about, lest the both of us dissolve into eye-rolling and sighs.

Most adult couples have something similar, such as differing religious beliefs (which we also have). Just takes a matter of letting some conversational sleeping dogs lie.

I wouldn't say most couples though...
