I think my friend just joined a cult/scam

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
tl;dr version

-Friend joined a series of self-help seminars
-She says seminars changed her life, now she's so happy and full of joy and her companions and teachers are so awesome and nice and she loves them so much
-Each seminar is ~$1600 (she had done three so far)
-She is doing volunteer work for the seminars because 'it's such a rewarding experience'.
-She's trying to convince me to join the seminars

This sounds so much like a cult to me. She insist that it's not and that the seminars are are worth the price. Am I reading too much into this? I don't know what I should do.

Say no, and ask why she feels you need life-changing seminars.

Well I wish I had $1600 just lying around that I can put toward a 'rewarding experience'. Except my rewarding experience would be 'trip to Bali'.

Swap Bali for Zion Nat'l Park and that's me.

I don't know about cult, but it might at least be a scam. And how can anyone afford that much multiple times?

I would keep asking her questions about it, maybe?

Each seminar is ~$1600 (she had done three so far)

I was going to say it's probably harmless but damn. This isn't a little bit of extra change, is it?

Yeah it sounds like a cult. If it's such a great thing then why are they charging her so much money? "seminars" aren't worth that much; hell, you can attend a semester of college for that much, and you get 20+ lectures out of that.

That sounds really worrying. I would start reading up on cults and their tactics if I was you. There's certain things they do to trick people into thinking they're having a spiritually fulfilling experience.

Yeah, it's a cult or a scam of some kind.

Yikes. I don't think you're wrong to be worried about this. It sounds like someone is scamming your friend.

It's a scam most assuredly, one that relies on some cult-like techniques. Which is not to say that it doesn't work, it's just that your friend is paying for extremely expensive pep talks. Unless you can afford to throw away that kind of money on people who'll spout lots of vague empty buzzwords at you and give you unlimited headpats, DO NOT GO.

$1600 a pop is a shit ton of money and there are many, many ways to spend it that are better than that.

Unless each seminar is some kind of weekend to several day thing, that includes accommodations at a hotel with at least a meal included, I don't see why it would cost that much unless it is a cult.

Also is the "volunteer work" for the seminars organization? Or do they specific where she can volunteer? Because if so I'd say it's further hints to cult.

If you really want to know ask her about how the seminar works, or if she could show you course work or literature from it, under the guise you're possibly interested. But yeah pull out and run if they want to set up meetings and or she acts super secretive about the seminars.
