Re: Meme
(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)It probably just sticks out to me when you or anyone else talks about fandoms I have a hateboner for. Such is the nature of irrational hatred! :p

Re: Meme
(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:42 am (UTC)(link)Waaaaay too many to list. I accumulate fandoms like some people collect stamps. Right now I'm really into Batman, especially 60s era Batman - the campiness of it gives me so much joy.

Re: Meme
(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:56 am (UTC)(link)That's understandable. DC's continuity is such a mess even the hardcore fans have trouble keeping track of it, and that's after two universe-wiping reboots! Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is lying (or in denial).

Re: Meme
(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)If that's the case I'd reccommend checking out DC's Elseworlds. They're basically semi-canonical AU fanfic; most of them are self-contained stories, and they don't really need any background knowledge. Some of my favourites are Gotham by Gaslight, Batman & Dracula: Red Rain, Superman: Secret Identity, and JLA: The Nail (that last one actually does need a bit of background knowledge of some of the major characters, but it's nothing you can't get from Googling).
And if you like things that are comically bad, you might want to read Superman: At Earth's End. It's one of the most hilariously awful things I've ever read. (It has Superman fighting twin Hitler clones in the distant future, which is run by evil mutants.)

Re: Meme
(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 01:31 am (UTC)(link)Some Elseworlds are dark, some aren't. They come in pretty much every tone. As for the specific ones I just rec'd:
- Gotham by Gaslight = dark
- Batman & Dracula: Red Rain = VERY dark (although still not as dark as its sequels, which are not as well written)
- Superman: Secret Identity = not dark, but not goofy either
- JLA: The Nail = somewhat dark, but ends on a less-dark note
- Superman: At Earth's End = tries way too hard to be dark and ends up being funny instead.

Fucking Doug Moench and Kelly Jones. I never liked this story, but it was before I got seriously into comic books (and not just reading random Batman stories) and I only just now realized why -- the art sucks and the writing sucks and I hate these two assholes and they had this long run on Batman in the 90s that was just EXCRUCIATING to read.

Re: Meme
You've got pre-Crisis (which covers everything from the Golden and Silver and majority of the Bronze Age) -- most of which disappeared from canon in 1985, including the concept of a Multiverse; Zero Hour made some minor changes, attempted to sort out Donna Troy and Hawkman (and failed), folded the Golden Age Justice Society back into continuity and finally got around to rebooting Legion of Superheroes; Infinite Crisis re-added a few extra pre-1985/pre-Zero Hour details and the followup 52 brought back the Multiverse officially, and finally Flashpoint threw it all out.
See? Not at all that complex!
