I read something very depressing and instinctually crossed myself.

I read and translated the Latin script on the ceiling of a church in Italy because the tour guide didn't know what it said. I don't speak Latin, I just know all the religious words.

I went inside a Hillsong affiliated place once out of curiosity. They're one of those singing and dancing type churches. It looked like a theatre, there was a big stage and the seating was tiered. It's enormous too.
Our school was on parish grounds next to the church, and I got in lots of trouble when I was a kid for asking why they wanted us to give them money for the poor when they had so many things they could sell if they really wanted to help them. Also, why there were never poor people at mass if we were helping them.
Eraser clapping duty for a month.

I did get the creepy as hell "come join us!" spiel from a couple of guys who looked like they could be in a boy band, wearing matching shirts. They made it pretty clear that it's God-lite, and it's more about having a good time. They offered me guitar lessons. I felt like they would have sent the attractive women to talk to me if I was a dude? Creeeeepy.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 02:55 am (UTC)(link)I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools for 13 years. Now I'm an agnostic atheist, though my family will never know if all goes well. Even when I was younger and put in some effort in trying to believe, I've only crossed myself for other people to see. Like during mass or if I was supposed to be praying.
Re: I read something very depressing and instinctually crossed myself.
But as far as the crossing goes... It seems like a lot of people that are raised in religion have a difficult time shaking it completely. Oh, you might not practice it or even believe, but at least for me (And Christianity) sometimes I'll be doing or saying something and think, “Well, the church would flip out over this; I'm clearly going to hell". I think it sarcastically, but it sort of bothers me.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)I've been lapsed for many years, and I never was one to cross myself a lot. But I can still get a nasty chilly shock if, for example, I unexpectedly see a Satanic goat's head symbol come across my dash, or have a sleepless night if I watch a movie with a "realistic" portrayal of demonic possession. (By which I mean one that's faithful to real-life descriptions and properly creepy and unnerving, rather than treated casually and downplayed like in, say, Supernatural. Which is my favorite show. Go figure.)
And though I no longer find a lot of frankly blasphemous material offensive, there are still lines I don't like to see crossed, and certain things I flatly refuse to do; I wouldn't sell my soul even jokingly, or knowingly make any statements that would constitute blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, or commit suicide (eternal damnation aside, of course, there are plenty of other good reasons not to do that.)
So yeah, I get it.
