Made the mistake of watching the video. Came to the conclusion that the lead singer was not a man that I would not want marrying my daughter either, given that he was a white guy with Rastafari dreds and I couldn't stop thinking about this the whole time:

And then the more I heard it the whinier it sounded... and... ugh. No man, that guy doesn't have an obligation to let you marry his daughter because we're all human or something.

Um.

No man gets to "let" you marry his daughter.

I assumed after listening to it a couple of times that the guy was going to marry the girl anyway, and he wanted the dad's blessing. I mean he basically said so, basically, "lol, we're getting married, can't you just be nice about it?"

Your attitude is creepy, ngl.

Also, one reason I rarely watch official music videos: they can ruin good songs. Can't comment on this one since I've never seen it.

No, no, no you misunderstand. I'm talking in the context of the song, where it seemed like the idea was that the father's blessing was something that that particular family (and presumably the girl the song is about) values and is thus an issue. I mean, in the first place find it suspect that the singer just presumes the girl even wants to marry him in the first place, but that's a whole other thing entirely.

If/when I have my own daughter I would hope I would impart the skills, knowledge and self-worth to make her own good choices.

In the context of that song, though - where this seems to be a thing - what I'm saying is I wouldn't be giving my blessing to that schlub either.

Also, I'm kind of offended that you'd assume that about me if we're all being honest here.

Well, see, that's why I hate that song in the first place. It's pretty damn demeaning from all sides.

For one, it's about a guy assuming he has the right to just marry a chick "anyway" regardless of her say so, assuming that the family has to like him just because he's another human being, and there's the double assumption that who a woman marries is a decision between men.

I just meant to convey that I hated the lead singer more than the dad who was supposed to be the villain after watching the video and listening to the lyrics more than a few times.

Where did you get that she didn't want to marry him? I thought it was pretty clear he and his gf were both pretty determined to get married...

It's ok if you don't like the lead singer because you think he looks schlubby or w/e. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about the interpretation of the song because I thought it was clear that the guy and the girl wanted to marry each other and her dad was being a jackass about it.

Edit: another point: I don't think he's saying the girl's dad has to like him, but the dad saying "no you can't marry her" is still dickish. If he doesn't like the guy he can just say "well, I can't stop you" for the sake of his daughter. Trying to sabotage a relationship his daughter cares about (and again, this could be a point of interpretation, but I definitely think she wants to marry him) because he doesn't like it is selfish.

Well initially there's no real reason to think the girl doesn't want to marry him. But then, we're only hearing the boyfriend's side of the story. It's an assumption, right? We have an unreliable narrator.

I guess it also ties into what I detest about American love stories, and the whole assumption of "the hero gets the girl in the end". It's basically another example (to me anyway) of the girl's feelings being absent in the love equation.

You can interpret the song the other way of course; that the guy is being upfront and the dad really is an asshole and just hates him for no reason. It's possible that I'm ruining it for myself by being the cynical jerk I am and overanalyzing it.

I just have a lot of feelings (and dislikes) about the culture surrounding romance and heterosexual relationships. Sorry if I got off on the wrong foot trying to explain it there, and if I'm getting off on too much of a rant about this, but I would really hate it if someone had the wrong impression about my actual beliefs regarding this kind of thing.

Again, I think we just have really different interpretations. And maybe you are being cynical? I'm very, very sensitive to the semi-ownership relationship between dads and daughters that has been so prevalent in western history and is still very visible, and I didn't pick that up from this at all (though I did roll my eyes at the guy even bothering to talk to her dad, but it sounded like he was doing it to appease him and his family, not because he HAD to or even because he felt like it was important to him [the narrator]).

I also think with most songs you have to decide how far you're going to think/overthink the "unreliable narrator" thing since usually there is only one narrator.

I don't know. Some love songs are duets. I tend not to think ill of them.
