Re: What Do You Consider Reality TV?

Anything that's not scripted is the usual definition I think.

So competitions, following people around with cameras, game shows...

Although I guess game shows are usually their own separate category? So maybe unscripted with a focus on the people participating in them. Like even with stuff like Chopped and the Amazing Race, they take the time to go into some personal details of the people's lives. Audiences connect with them, put themselves in their shoes. That sort of thing.

There's no such thing as unscripted television except legit documentaries and like America's funniest home videos and shit like that. All ''reality'' television is scripted.

"Scripted" is probably not the correct word there. Like... it's mostly set up a certain way, and guided, and selectively edited, and all that, but I don't think they usually involve straight-up reading scripts.

They employ literal script writers. The actors are sometimes not reading it verbatim and sometimes to producers ask for ad lib, but there is an actual script.

We're all very impressed by you.

I'm not very impressed that most people still can't grasp how absolutely fictional 'reality' tv is.

"Reality TV is not actually a depiction of reality, in almost all cases" is a v different claim from "All reality TV is literally scripted"

I'll amend it to all the reality shows I've had experience with are literally scripted, and that is quite a few. I'll accept the possibility that maybe there are some that aren't, but it seems unlikely from what I've seen.

It's scripted, but not...totally? Not in the same way. It's not about trying to construct a plot and a reality separate from the "actors" as real people. It's about thing that actually happen in reality.

Of course, that doesn't mean they're realistic. I used to think "reality TV" was an oxymoron, and maybe it kind of is, but compared to absolute fiction? the phrase makes more sense.

But that's actually what it does. People play themselves like characters in scenarios that are almost always entirely constructed for the purpose of a tv show. What it is is lazy fiction that uses the excuse of being 'real' to do away with all those pesky things like research, continuity, depth and quality.

I think maybe you and I just watch entirely different kinds of reality TV? Not being sarcastic here btw. I have no interest in stuff like Jersey Shore, I think maybe that's more what you're talking about? The kinds of reality TV I watch definitely have the drama dialed up to nine but they're not shows about peoples entire (real or fictitious) lives, just about really specific things (like What Not to Wear being about fashion and shopping). Do I think every thing on there is real, non-scripted, and sincere? Of course not. But is it trying to tell an actual fictional story with actual fictional characters? No, the people are all playing themselves, and the scenarios are at least based in reality.
