Partly I agree with this, but it's also not so simple. People can take their medication and still have periods of being extremely unwell, and once you ARE that unwell you don't know or believe you need help. This is one of the problems of mental illness.

He's in a way better position than majority of people with mental illness but that doesn't change the nature of mental illness as a problem.

nayrt

This. Also I feel more sympathy for the anonymous homeless mentally ill guy who has no hope of help than for Charlie Sheen, but the anonymous guy doesn't have his delusions broadcast to millions of people.

I'm not suggesting mental illness isn't a serious problem. I'm merely saying that as a person with a more than adequate amount of financial resources and family support, my sympathy for Sheen (vs. for mentally ill people who lack the financial resources and family support) is limited.

Pity you experience compassion as a limited resource.

"Pity you experience compassion as a limited resource."

Though I realize you're simply indulging in a self-righteous sneer at another anon, you're missing the fact that everyone experiences compassion as a limited resource. If you didn't, you'd be emotionally overwhelmed by all the people and situations that deserve it, and presumably you need/want to find the time to work, go to school, socialize, spend time with your loved ones, read a book, watch some TV, get some Thai take out, etc. etc. without sitting there drowning in a tidal wave of compassion for every single injustice in the world.

I do, too. But the difference between you and me is that I don't pretend otherwise.
