There aren't many animes like Utena that I've found, I mean that is part of what made it a hit of it's time and a classic now.

Have you watch the original Sailor Moon? It might seem like a weird recommendation since it's not the same type of series but Kunihiko Ikuhara worked on Sailor Moon as well as Utena and I find a lot of people tend to like both those series. Sailor Moon has some pretty emotionally powerful episodes as well.

I honestly don't think Sailor Moon is a weird recommendation. I've watched both Utena and Sailor Moon and I think they're comparable because the director has a very distinct style. Both shows also have Kotono Mitsuishi and Aya Hisakawa in main roles.

AYRT I agree I just didn't know what OP wanted out of a show and what they liked about Utena so I wasn't sure if a Sailor Moon recommendation would be completely off base.

Like Sailor Moon is definitely a more hopeful and less messed up series then Utena is. I think they can both end up reaching the same audience (and like I said a lot of Utena fans are Sailor Moon fans and visa versa) but they aren't the same stories at all so it's still possible to like one and not the other.

Utena is just as hopeful of a series as Sailor Moon I'd argue, but they are definitely telling different stories.

Utena is hopeful in the end yes, but you have to go through a lot of dark things to get there.

I love Utena but it can be really depressing, especially when you get into the black rose saga and even later in the series when things are pretty grim.

Sailor Moon has some sad episodes but it also has a lot of light hearted comedy. The comedy in Utena lessens considerably when they really get into how messed up the school is and how abusive Akio is.

Agreed. Utena can be very (well mostly) depressing given abuse as a center plot. I think that's actually one of the reasons I actually enjoy Sailor Moon more even if I think that Utena on the whole is better written. :P

I feel the same! Utena is a lot tighter in it's writing that is for sure. I think Sailor Moon is just easier to pick up and watch whenever you feel like it.

I saw the first 40ish episodes of Sailor Moon... that's the first season, I guess?

I found it enjoyable in a bubblegum way, but also drowning in filler. I don't think I can sit through another 100-odd episodes of that, unless the plot gets a little denser.

I'm tempted to see the reboot because it's more condensed, but everyone says it's crap, idk.

Try watching the third season! I think that's when Ikuhara took over as head director. If you do decide to give it a go, keep in mind to avoid any English dubs of it.

I think the reboot is horrible, but maybe you'd like it. Why not give it a shot?

I will second anon above's comment in saying you should try out Sailor Moon S, the plot was tighter, there's still filler but not nearly as much as in the first season.

And if you didn't finish out the first season of Sailor Moon, I recommend watching at least the closing episodes of the first season because they were extremely good storytelling (just basically the last 2 episodes are the best.)

Stars is also good. Supers is the one to avoid if you dislike filler, because Supers is basically all filler.

I wouldn't in good conscience recommend the reboot (Crystal) because it's pretty weak, the only time it's good is when it's taking straight from the manga and in that case you should really just read the manga.

Crystal is pretty much a panel to panel adaptation of the manga though.

No.

Well, there are definitely deviations, but they are relatively minor. Keep in mind, I've only the first season or "arc"

*only watched, dammit

Crystal is really not a panel to panel adaptation though, the black moon arc has been a little closer but the dark kingdom arc had a LOT of deviations and none of them really improved upon the story.

Crystal doesn't have a lot of the comedy Naoko had. It added the Shitennou/Senshi romance which Naoko never officially wrote about in canon other then vague hinting at in Sailor V (and even though I liked the idea of the romance Crystal really did not develop it properly and trying to shoehorn it in while keeping the manga pace was a huge mistake.) There was definitely less of the inner senshi personality traits and girls becoming friends in Crystal and a lot of other minor deviations which overall weakened the story.

The art direction isn't even close either, there's actually a post somewhere on tumblr where someone took the panels from the first manga, and screenshots from the 90s anime and from Crystal and the 90s anime was actually CLOSER in the first episode then Crystal was.
