I for the life of me will never understand why Death Note is so. fucking. popular. I guess I should just kill myself.

Y'know, I was reading it for professional reasons (I review comics; it's the best job ever), and thinking the same thing until I came to a certain plot twist near the end of the first volume which made me go "HA! Light, you magnificent bastard!" out loud. So, yeah. I can see both why some people don't like it and why other people do.

mostly cause i think reviewing comics WOULD be a fantabulous job, but at the same time, would also suck, cause you gotta read the shitty ones too.

I gave the first volume a try and spent the entirety wanting to punch Light in the face.

The anime is pretty. The manga is really worse written than it needed be, but as exasparated as I was with it, all that exposition is a lot easier to digest when you don't actually have to read it. For the more shallow ones among us *cough*, it's not so difficult to ignore the shortcomings of the story as long as it looks good enough.

Of course, I'm just here for Matsuda anyway.

I don't know. I could never work past having someone decide life and death over other people based on whim and fancy, because no matter how righteous he thought he was (at some point, at least), he wasn't right. *shrug*

Well, the point is that he is actually batshit insane.

Cool. His batshit insanity proved to not be entertaining to me. To each their own.

Hey, I didn't say it had to be. It just seemed like you hadn't read any or much of the series so I was pointing out that the reason why he feels like he can decide who lives and who dies is because he's a crazy fuck. Doesn't mean that it suddenly has to appeal to you.

Personally, I think Death Note is one of the funniest things I have ever read. I don't take it seriously at all.

*grins* The tone wasn't mean to be taken as less than a shrug. I didn't read much of the series, but I knew he was rather insane (and had many friends telling me the same) - the series never ended up appealing to me. Frankly, I have a hard time taking any series seriously, and I read for enjoyment and entertainment. When there's a lack of the latter, then I stop reading. =)

Go you, then! I have difficulty realizing when something is causing me too much head pain and I should therefore stop following it.

Kare Kano, best manga ever or BEST MANGA EVER.

BEST EVER, definitely. Like, beyond the power of capslock to express.

Probably because it's so different from the wads of shounen manga out there - the Bleaches, the Narutos, the One Pieces... the battles were intellectual ones instead of physical ones and the series had a real sense of moral ambiguity - something that most shounen anime lack.

The over-the-top nature of it all - *especially* in the anime (OMG dramatic writing sequences) also gives it a bizarre sense of humor, and add in Ryuk and his apples... well, there's many potential lulz there. :P

I liked it, but if it's not your bag then whatever, really.
