LOL? Wtf, cosplay = Halloween.
If there was a ghost or Frankenstein in a an anime, you could say that Halloween is cosplaying too.

Not the secret poster.

I think they mean that the cosplaying was terrible--they had inaccurate costumes, didn't spend much time making said costumes, and probably chose to cosplay characters that didn't suit their body type. The kind of cosplayers that people make fun of on the internet. Not cosplayers as a whole.

Well if it was cosplaying as whole, I still think its stupid.
And so what if the outfit is a bit bad, not everyone can sew :'D I did a horrible job on my first outfit, but I used a lot of time on it.

It's kind of obvious when somebody is not only a newbie but they didn't put too much time or research into their costumes though. I've seen a purple Merchant from Resident Evil 4, once; the person looked more like an unfashionable hobo. I've seen a few Naruto cosplayers that had the blue in the design drawn onto orange windbreakers with a Sharpie marker. Not everyone can sew, but everyone CAN afford to put a little time away to at least try to make their costumes accurate and presentable.

No you see, it's not that easy. It can be compared to drawing. Some do it perfectly from second two, others try and try and try and the result won't turn better no matter how much time they use and how much they want it to work out. Cosplayers usually don't want to look bad, they're mostly trying their best.

I rather have fun with the unfashionable hobo than with someone who bought their entire outfit in ebay. So what if the result turned out to be failure? You at least tried!

But the point is that some people DON'T try. And I believe that the secretmaker is talking about someone in THAT minority.

"and probably chose to cosplay characters that didn't suit their body type. The kind of cosplayers that people make fun of on the internet."

You mean like girls who cosplays male characters? Like, the majority of cosplayers out there?

...Yeah, I know that's not what you meant. I'm just damn sick of people mocking fat/ugly/whatever people for cosplaying characters who are skinny/pretty/whatever. (And I'm not saying you do that or anything, don't get me wrong. I'm just speaking generally here; the internet as a whole and all that jazz.)

[identity profile] mirwolf.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's just exasperating for people who are fat/ugly/whatever because there are practically no good fat/ugly characters. =|

I agree, I am too.

The majority of game/anime/manga/whatever characters are attractive. The same can't be said of the human race.

What? Only pretty people are allowed to have fun? What bullshit.

There are places for heavy people. Most of them suck, but 90% of everything sucks.

Case in point, a secret was posted here a few months ago about fat people cosplaying skinny characters; there was some obese guy cosplaying Mello form Death Note, and it was fucking genius. Weight doesn't automatically disqualify you from cosplaying, you just need to be more CREATIVE about it.

Also, the same thing goes for every other type: tall people playing short characters and vice versa, thin people playing voluptuous females, etc. If you really care about what you look like, then make an effort to find a character who you could plausibly do well.

The thing about cosplay is that you're putting your body on display as art, basically. An obese person cosplaying, in my mind, is on par with someone posting really shitty fanart online. Mocking it is an asshole thing to do, but the fact remains that they were opening themselves to mockery in the first place for not waiting until they're more polished.

And on that note, I don't put fat and ugly in the same category. Strange facial features and odd body shape can look great with the right makeup/clothing whatever (let's face it, even the fugliest of the fugly don't look like the Phantom of the Opera), but being fat isn't a static unchangeable physical feature. I'm sick of people (and I hate to say it, mostly Americans) going off about how 'fat is beautiful' and 'love your body' yadda yadda (and yes, loving your body is a good thing, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, BUT)... the fact remains that being fat (substantially so, not just kinda chubby) is (with a few exceptions) the result of poor eating and exercising habits.

I just can't sympathize at all with obese cosplayers - if you put that much work into your clothing, why not put the same work into your body? I work hard to eat right and stay fit, and I just don't see why other people can't do the same.

Everyone's metabolism is different. Some people do eat right and work out and still end up on the heavy side. In contrast you have skinny runts who can wolf down 5 Big Macs in one sitting and they don't gain a pound.

Your body =/= their body.

Re: 3

(Anonymous) 2008-01-17 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Metabolism accounts for a certain natural amount of weight - it doesn't account for being unhealthily fat/obese, except in rare cases. Some people do have insane metabolisms, but they are in the vast minority. Some people gain a lot of weight because of medication - again, a minority. I'm not talking about the minority. And eating five Big Macs is bad for you even if you're skinny, for that matter.

Unhealthy weight - be it too fat or too skinny - isn't something that people should flip off as unchangeable. I really hate people who abuse their bodies - be it with drugs, food (or lack thereof), through self-injury etc. Taking your body for granted - just ugh.
