Ooh, lovelorn is a good word for it. I'm always a sucker for the tragical past-relationship types, that's why I'm also fond of Freya from FFIX and Hatori from Furuba. I always saw Locke as more messed up than heroic. And the relationship between Locke and Celes is kind of messed up too. It doesn't make me like it any less...it's just not pure as the driven snow.

I didn't have a big problem with the reworking of the Aria's lyrics; if you've heard the recording from the "More Friends" Final Fantasy concert from 2005, they're closer to that.

Haha, I guess therein lies one of the biggest issues in me understanding what the OP is aon about: like I said, I was a sevenyear old boy when I first played it. A very unromantic one, at that. Good luck getting that kid to understand and apprecciate if someone's love is 'pure' or not, or even pay attention to any romantic subplots that wasn't Cyan's dead wife or Terra's 'family love' for the kids in the World of Ruin.

Ah, excellent. Then I can mill out of the sheeppen and happily plunk out my cash for the inevitable DS remake, which I'm certain will come if enough people buy the DS-remakes for 4 and 5, without feeling like SE's tool.

Hm, it might indeed be a case of rose-tinted glasses at work. I did not finish playing FFVI until my first year of college (I was too impatient to finish turn-based games when I was younger). If I had played it through when I was a 12 year old and often (and tragically, I would have said) in and out of unrequited crushes, I would have eaten Locke and Celes' story like ants on a picnic.

As for the "original" verses the updated English script...If you're localizing a script to an audience that you assume is filled with nothing but 7 year old unromantic boys, it's likely that you're going to snip at the tragic love plot.

Yeah, rose-tinted glasses could indeed be at work here. All these discussions make me want to replay the game again, so I can see if I can actually focus on characterdevelopment, underlying tragic themes and romance, instead of just massacres, in your face tragedy an the characters being badass, since that's all that wee little me cared about then. What can I say, I was alternately a very depressing and very maniacal toddler. Which might explain why Shadow is my favorite hero, Kefka is my homeboy any day of the week, and I spent years dreaming of ever doing something as badass as Edgars escape from the sinking Baron Castle when Kefka sets fire to it.

Oh, and Sabin and Edgar's sibling rivalry, that I remembered fondly as well. Because nothing get's to a seven year old middle childm ore than stories about a calm, cool younger brother and his pesky, annoying older brother.

I still haven't finished my replay of the GBA version because there are all these new Espers and I can't decide who to level up with what. FFVI WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?

(So. For all the discussion about character motivation and tragic pasts, it all comes down to level grinding them all into tiny gods who can all cast Ultima.)

Psh, Vanish/X-Zone is where it's at.

They took out the Vanish/Doom trick. You actually have to work to defeat bosses now (except the undead ones; casting Life or throwing a Phoenix down still works).

New espers include Cactuar, Leviathan and GILGAMESH.
