8, TREMENDOUS SPOILERS IN COMMENT

I really wanted to like Iris, but something in her story just killed her for me. It wasn't the vapid bint thing, so much as ... I don't know, am I the only one who found the fact that she was actually "Dollie" incredibly infuriating? It not only destroyed all interesting ~*~SECRET~*~ potential for Iris, it did a huge number on how badass Dahlia was.

Additionally, that's why I can't ship Phoenix/Iris. They have no chemistry at all, and Phoenix has grown past the person was back then. I don't ship most het things in PW fandom, honestly -- Phoenix and Maya remind me of my brother and sister, and that quite frankly freaks me out even more than the fact that they were already familial -- but it's true, Phoenix had so much more passion for other characters in the game. I never really felt much emotion when he was talking with Iris.

In conclusion I recognize something happened there but I really hate how it did, and I actually get quite tired of people saying Phoenix/Iris is canon. They were dating six years ago, when he thought she was someone else. I actually find it doubtful they'd get back together, as six years is a long time and changes people a lot -- especially people in their early twenties.

tl;dr comment is tl;dr

I can sort of understand what you're saying there. For me, I felt like Phoenix was kind of regressing a bit. I would have liked to see him get over Iris/Dollie/whatever you want to call her, instead of the whole revelation. But he just sort of fell for her all over again and they went back to how they were. At least, that's what it felt like for me. It was probably the build up of all the other relationships with characters like Maya, Edgeworth, and Pearl that made his with Iris so much less special.

I do find the whole thing kind of endearing. But at the same time, I was slightly disappointed... If that makes sense.

Agreed with all of this. I didn't necessarily dislike Iris but she made the whole situation a lot less interesting. And Phoenix/Iris does absolutely nothing for me.

YES. It was part of why I was so underwhelmed by Dahlia as a villain. Granted, I did think the bit with Maya channeling her all along was brilliant, but how it all added up...not so much.

Instead of fooling Phoenix into thinking she was a sweetheart for eight months, she fooled him for ... two days. Oh yeah, that's so badass.

It just takes away almost all of Dahlia's awesome potential. I'd thought she was actually quite scary in 3-1 and 3-4, and ranked her among the "big" killers like Gant, Von Karma, etc., but by the end of 3-5 the story, mostly Iris' end, had just turned so sour for Dahlia as a villain.

I totally agree here--I mean, there was that whole bit with the earthquake when Miles and Phoenix were trying to get Maya out of the temple, and Phoenix focused more on Miles than Maya once he found out the earthquake hadn't destroyed where she was, IIRC.

I disliked Phoenix/Iris too, not only because he regressed and found it okay to forgive "Dollie" for what she'd done to him (I mean, whether or not she "wanted to", she still *lied*), but because there were all these amazing relationships that had been cultivated with other characters that were kind of thrown out the window. I mean, look at how things changed between him and Miles--now Iris can waltz in, say she was really his 'girlfriend', and that makes things somewhat all right? No, no, no.

Granted, Phoenix can kind of hold on to things like a butthurt girlfriend--just look at how he reacted to Miles' disappearance in JFA--but I think him forgiving her was... meh.

It wasn't even the forgiveness that got to me so much. It was lame, yeah, but it was the sort of thing Phoenix would do. I can understand forgiving her and saying he'd never lost his faith in her, because really, that's how Phoenix is. He never lost his faith in Edgeworth, either -- at least, that's how I saw it, even if he spent 3/4 of the second game mad enough at Edgeworth to tell him, when he came back, that he should have died. Wow, Phoenix. (This is another reason why I don't like Phoenix/Iris; he shows so much more intense emotion with characters like Edgeworth. Even his panic when Maya was kidnapped in JFA or missing in T&T was done more dramatically and passionately.)

It's more in the fact that it was presented as though he had fallen back into love with her. It's been six years, she did lie, and Phoenix is a tremendously different person in T&T "present" than he was in T&T "past." I honestly read most of the case as him just wanting closure on that; just wanting to know what had really happened, if he had actually been wrong to trust her, etc. But then they played so many of the cards romantically -- and in a very bad way -- that it left a bitter taste in my mouth, and it undermined everything they'd built up with him and the other characters so slowly.

Yesssss. I had meant to write that in my comment before, but I guess I was just being stupid, haha. And it really did cheapen the development and intensity with the other characters, like you said, because it was like they could just place the blame on their sudden... not 'cop-out', but I can't think of a better word at the moment... on the fact that they'd been dating for months six years ago.

But thankfully she's in prison, so it can't really escalate, and I don't think she's referred to in GS4. Of course, neither is Edgeworth. >/
