I have no idea who this woman is, but I concur, OP, she is very pretty. However, she looks less vixen temptress and more wholesome innocent to me.

That was kind of OP's point tbh. It's just that, iirc, the character she's playing in the series is supposed to be a temptress - and she certainly doesn't look the part.

Very true, and I do agree.

Does she act it, though?

I'll admit I'm not familiar with the source material at all, so maybe the character is supposed to look a certain way and doesn't. But seduction is often more about attitude than looks. The most temptress-like woman I've ever known was rather plain, but she had an...aura about her that made people fall all over themselves when around her.

I haven't the foggiest. I don't actually watch the show, so I can't speak for her performance in the role.

Not the OP but I have to say the character is more straight forward in stating her desires (to the person of her affection) then acting the part of a temptress.

Even when she did go the route of seducing (showing up wearing only a partially laced bodice under a cloak) it was more very matter of fact 'I want you and want you to take me' then what I would traditionally think a temptress would do (which would be a bit more coy and teasing).

The main difference is that I think they do just very, very minimal makeup on her, like foundation and possibly mascara, specifically to make her look younger. We look alike, and I look horrible if there's just foundation on. (My skin without makeup on looks fine, though.)

Should a Scottish girl in the... 1700s or whenever this takes place be wearing heavy makeup though? I rather thought she's supposed to be looking like she's not really wearing any makeup.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think she'd be wearing much makeup, either. But most people associate "vixen" with heavier makeup.

It doesn't help that Caitriona Balfe is just absolutely stunning without makeup, so other girls might look less stunning in comparison.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Caitriona Balfe may well be stunning without make up, but we don't see her without make up on the show, because nobody appears on TV or in movies without make up on. Caitriona Balfe's make up will be subtle, i.e. the "natural look", but if she didn't have any on it's likely the lighting would make her look like a pasty zombie.

Well to be fair, in this series nobody looks like they're living in the 1700s for real. By all rights, Claire's (the main actress) hair should look like a snarled, greasy rat's nest, but it doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehh I read the first book and was not a huge fan, I thought the TV series did it a lot better. Though I have no opinion on this character in particular I'm fine with her portrayal being young and naive, because she's a contrast to Claire. Plus, that other female character (forget her name) kind of comes across as more vixeny...

Gheillis Duncan?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she's pretty but she's also kind of forgettable in the show, like I could easily mistake her for any background actress.

Don't they say in the book that her name is pronounced "L'HEER"? It sounds like "LEER-ee" when they say it in the show. (Not exactly related, it just bothered me.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
da

IIRC they pronounce it in the modern Irish (Gaelic) fashion.

Not sure how that maps onto the Scots Gaelic pronunciation though.

Yeah, I suppose there could be scholarly disagreement, too.

Image: pictures of the actress Nell Hudson, in costume as Laoghaire MacKenzie and in street clothes

I was quite disappointed by how Laoghaire looks in the series because I’d always imagined her to be younger and more vixenishly pretty.

She’s supposed to be a temptress after all, a plausible rival to Claire. I’m not seeing that with this portrayal, which is both disappointing and surprising, because

just LOOK at how gorgeous this actress is! WTF Outlander, show her some love.

Being a temptress is about someone's character more than their looks.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean personality or attitude rather than character? Because it sounds like you're making a moral judgement. Which you're entitled to do of course, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the context.
