School Lunch

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
For those of you who ate lunch provided by your school, what did they serve you?

What was your favorite meal?

Has it left any impact on you (like certain foods always go together)?

I had free lunch. And the best was OBVIOUSLY the pizza. Especially the giant, pepperoni slices we occasionally had.

I think my childhood in general made me predisposed towards cheaper foods because that is what I grew up eating.

The thing I remember most from elementary school lunch is Uncrustables (?) They were grilled cheese sandwiches with no crust, it was kind of like a bread pie with cheese in the middle. I loved those things.

Pizza Burgers were always my favorite. Followed closely by Italian Dunkers.

I just realized that the Tater Tot Hotdish we were served might've been a local dish. It did have corn where everywhere else has beans and I still like it with corn.

Chicken nuggets and plastic mac&cheese go together. I used to put the sweet BBQ sauce that went with the nuggets into the mac&cheese to add some taste to the mac&cheese. It's probably the nastiest acquired taste I have left over from school lunch.

Also, chocolate milk was always a special treat.

The pizza thing, I guess.

It didn't really leave an impact beyond finding it pretty damn funny that it was also prison food - literally.

The rectangle pizzas were always my favorites.

A sausage baked inside a bread roll
Cottage cheese in chocolate. Sometimes it had an unusually thick chocolate glazing.
That's all I remember anyway.

Oh man, I didn't eat school lunches until in secondary school if I can help it! I was a notoriously picky eater, and Malaysian public school cafeterias are... not the cleanest of places. Seriously, I got food poisoning once by eating my school's own keropok lekor (a sort of snack made by frying grounded-up fish in sago flour).

That really soured my opinion on school lunches in general.

No school lunches in any school district I've ever attended, but I've eaten way more hospital food in my life than is at all healthy.

What was your favourite meal?

Anything that fell into any of the following categories (which wasn't often, let me tell you):

1. Met my dietary restrictions (like winning the lottery)
2. Was easy to both chew AND digest (rare unicorn of a meal)
3. Did not taste like death leftovers. (Can I tell you how very very very very bad hospital soup is, FS.)

Has it left any impact on you?

Absolutely! I never eat hospital food. That stuff will kill you.

You could buy "the platter" or a hotdog, or else bring a bag lunch and just buy milk. Tastykakes (the best snack cakes ever) and ice cream sandwiches were available from a little stand against the wall.

The platter was usually pretty gross. It was usually gray or beige--baked chicken, meatloaf, Yankee pot roast, or this concoction called snow on the mountain, which was loose ground meat over mashed potatoes (dipped up with an ice cream dipper) and covered in brown gravy which would get a skin on it if it took you a long time to get through the lunch line.

I learned later that snow on the mountain was originally creamed chipped beef on toast, a meal that appeared frequently in mess halls in WWII, known to the GIs as shit on the shingles. That was a good way to describe it, except that we didn't have shingles.

The big days at my school were pizza days and pretzel days. We had English muffin pizzas with a sauce that was surprisingly delicious. Pretzels were Philly-style soft pretzels, sprinkled with coarse salt and slathered with mustard. Also delicious!

Every other day was greasy cardboard pizza, the sides were always fries and there was a salad bar that barely anyone touched.

My favorite meal, as was most of the school's, was taco day! The line was always hella long on taco day, though.

I am way late to the party here, but my school district had amazing lunches! All hand-made from scratch. One of the lunch ladies' entire job was to handmake a ton of rolls from scratch every single day. She had the strongest hands ever. My favorites were: hot ham and cheese (these were baked inside of rolls), Frito Pie (kind of a local thing - it's chili con carne poured over Fritos with lettuce, cheese and tomatoes on top), and chili, which for some reason was always served with cinnamon rolls. We were really lucky.
