ozaline: Ozma from Skottie Young and Eric Shanower's Ozma of Oz comic adaptation (Ozma)

I came into the Oz fandom later. I had some exposure to it as a child (the anime, return to Oz, Dreamer of Oz, and of course 1939), but I never read the books till I was an adult.

Still one of my top 10 fandoms, and farthest away I've ever traveled for a con.

Yeah, we were obsessed with the movie around the age of five or six, and then got into the books once we had the reading skills. We were that wee hipster who kept insisting the books were better.

What's Dreamer of Oz? And I didn't know there was an anime!

Actually there's at least Three anime (as well as an anime based on the Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, which you probably know is in the Oz universe and also by L Frank Baum.) Actually there's more than that, if you count various one shot specials, like the Hello Kitty episode.

The one I saw as a kid is one that was dubbed by Cinar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJpcpEGaKJ8 which was a TV series that covered Wizard, and Land (fairly faithfully though Dorothy is there for the Land events), as well as Ozma, and Emerald City (which it takes huge liberties with. The DVD version out there cuts it down to four movies, but the 52 episodes were available legally online from CookieJar not sure if that's still the case.

There was a 1982 Movie version by Toho: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJpcpEGaKJ8

Then there's a scifi version: Space Oz No Bouken/Galaxy of Oz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we3MSqEISSU

Dreamer of Oz is a biopic of L Frank Baum, made a pretty big impact on me as a kid, even though, again, I didn't get into his books till later. It wasn't a very accurate biopic though. It's included on the 70th, and 75th anniversary box-sets of the MGM movie.

hehe, sorry I know that's a lot of info to dump.

Links for Cinar and Toho are the same. Whichever that link was for, though, I am pleased to see them showing the Good Witch of the North and Glinda as separate people! The space version, I'm kinda uncertain about.

I am ALWAYS down for an Oz infodump.

Sorry that was Toho, and actually you don't see Glinda in that video, the angelic woman with the Ozma like headpiece is one of the multiple forms that the Wizard takes. Glinda is indeed a seperate person from the Witch of the North but she's basically in the movie for like a minute.

Here's the correct links for the Cinar dubbed one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE8x8qr9guw (Japanese intro)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOL4tmWp5no (English intro)

Also yeah: I didn't like the space version based on the English dub (which edited a TV series into a movie), and stopped watching before she even met her friends.

Oh wow! To my surprise, I like the Cinar one's Japanese intro a lot better. I'm digging the art style, and Dorothy is adorable! The Toho one, maybe it was just the English translation, but it felt kinda shrill and didn't quite mesh for me.

Man, we've been itching for more adaptations of Oz. (Er, good ones. The one about the wizard that just came out looked AWFUL.) It never occurred to me to look for anime about it! (Gigi, who is an American McGee fanatic, was deeply dismayed that he hasn't gotten to this Oz adaptation yet.)

I have the Monkey statue from his first attempt to make an Oz game.

And yeah Oz is fairly popular in Japan so there's quite a bit of interesting Oz stuff that comes out of there. I have two stage musicals from Japan (one of them starring Hello Kitty).

There's other interesting Oz adaptations in other countries too... like this Russian one that mixes Baum with a little bit of Volkov (if you don't know he's a Russian writer who rewrote Wizard then made his own sequels) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML10BcaWddE *the song there is from a Japanese video game, this is a fan made video* Sadly the only English dub is an edited version from the UK called The Haunted Forest of Oz.

There's also an interesting Polish Cartoon, but no translations on that: http://superfilm.pl/serial-W-krainie-czarnoksieznika-Oza/odcinek-1-s01e01

Ooh, that Russian one has cool designs for the wicked witches of the west and east. It's so refreshing to see them in a non-MGM design! MGM really has kinda colored how Oz is interpreted in the USA, to the point it kinda bothers me.

Unfortunately, the polish one seems to be too much for my comp to run. What little I can see between lags looks really cool, though! I'm sad my computer can't buffer it.
