Use condoms for all activities. Always. No exceptions, no excuses. Always been in a position where someone can't surreptitiously take it off without noticing; there are horror stories of things like that happening, so it pays to be cautious.

Then there's the obvious advice of not hooking up with someone you haven't talked to for a bit, meeting in a public place, going somewhere you feel safe, not agreeing to meet more than one person at a time. That kind of thing. I also carry a (legal) knife in my car just in case. I have never had to use it but I have straight up walked away from situations that were sending up red flags.

Usually if something seems off you can trust your gut and just drop it. No matter how horny you are don't ignore it if you get a bad feeling about someone, just be like, "Yeah on second thought I'm not interested. Bye."

In my area the population is small enough that you get a feeling for people who are constantly posting ads. I make it a rule to avoid those people.

Edit: And asking for recent test results is nice in theory, but it's not a guarantee if people are having a lot of anonymous sex, since some results can take months to show up positive. I don't bother with it and just make sure I'm in a situation where I feel comfortable and in control, and I always have a way out.

Yeah, I was surprised people mentioned tests. It takes time between infection and a positive and one could certainly have caught it since the last result. I hope people aren't relying on tests as much as it seems.

The main reason [aside from having an idea of how recently they were given a clean bill of health] is because people who tend to stay on top of getting tested also tend to be pretty for using general protection with regards to sex as a whole.

It's not a guarantee by any means, but it can be a good sign.

Well, sure, but I don't rely on it. Periodic STI testing is a nice (and necessary) thing to have for yourself, but that doesn't mean someone who hasn't had a test done in the past six months is automatically a terrible person either- they might have been in a sexually monogamous relationship or in the middle of a dry spell and therefore not have bothered to make an appointment.

God damn it, dreamwidth. I don't know why you "lost my cookie" and logged me out, but stop it.

AYRT

Where did I say you should rely on it? I just said that, while it can be wrong, it can be a good indicator.
