That's how I feel about it too. Being impatient when it comes to viewing new shows, I'll invariably end up watching the subs first which results in those voices becoming the default for the character. If I hear a different voice later, regardless of the language, it won't sound right.

There are some decent dubs out there, but I mostly prefer subs too. Partially because of the VA's, partially because I often hear them first and from that point on that's the voice; anything else sounds wrong and won't do.

Yeah I've done that, with books too ofc, where the voice I hear is nothing like the voice I hear in my head. Takes a while to get used to orz

Text: I prefer sub, but not because I think it’s better.

I always read the manga first and I get used to the voices I came up with for the characters.

I don’t understand Japanese, so it doesn’t replace the voices I hear when reading or writing fic.

There are good dubs out there (Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist), but I also watch subs as well, especially due to the voice actors on the show (which I'm all biased for the likes of Kazuya Nakai, Kimura Ryouhei, Namikawa Daisuke, Suwabe Junichi and Ono Yuuki to name a few).

As for the whole voices not sounding right after hearing the dub: that's how I've felt the first time watching Rurouni Kenshin and Dragon Ball Z, in which both of them were voiced by women. However, I came to love them, especially Suzukaze Mayo's Kenshin, because she used to be part of the Takarazuka Revue.

Once I started watching subs, I could never watch dubs again. The quality of the voice acting is just incomparable, and I wonder how anyone can bear to listen to people who sound so cardboard and seem incapable of acting.

It's not even a "I saw X first, and that's the voice I came to associate with the character, so I prefer it", it's just the vast gulf in quality. It's difficult for me now to even watch animated shows where the default cast is English-speaking now that I've gotten used to hearing people actually capable of acting.

As someone who speaks both English and Japanese, there are actually some incredibly good dubs out there now. The days of terrible dubbing are pretty much over (thankfully) and in fact there are some cases where I felt the English voice actors did a better job than the Japanese ones did.

I still generally prefer the original language for anything, but this notion that all dubs suck just isn't true anymore.

I was spoiled during the 90's - 2000 dub ADV era, and when I hear newer subs they just don't compare to me. I know it's probably nostalgia blinders, because some of them are equally cheesy and bad, but I can't help it.
