Revisiting old favorites?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else gone back to some of their old fandoms/favorite medias for fun lately? Do they still hold up, in your opinion?

I'm replaying the first Wild Arms right now, and goddamn, I'd forgotten how much FUN it is. Not to mention the awesome soundtrack.

For obvious reasons, Thunderbirds.
Despite some wonky SFX and 60's values, still holds up.

I revisit old fandom fic all the time. Generally, it ends with me groaning and wondering how I thought the fic was any good. DBZ, I love you but your fic is terrible.

Though, on revisiting the LOTR fandom, I fell in love with a completely different character!

I reread Telanu's PSOH fics all the time and they never disappoint and I am ever glad I'd saved them before the author pulled them off the net.

I reread some of the old fics I've favorited and sometimes I wonder why I loved them in the first place. Some of the Harry Potter ones do still hold up and others don't at all.

The Sims 2 is still one of my favorite games ever and I'll constantly go back and play it.

I revisit old favorite media from time to time. Mostly video games, since while I've sold a lot of my old games years ago, I've been able to find the majority of them on either Steam or GOG.com. Otherwise, I kinda have to stick with ROMs for some of them. ._.;

Final Fantasy 7 was one of those that actually got better with age: with a ton of life experiences since I'd last played it, seeing the game's story with an adult perspective -and thus, picking up a ton of stuff that went over my head initially- really made the game even better than before. And while I will always have a soft spot for Aerith, Tifa became my all-time favorite character in the game (with Red XIII coming in a close second). I wish I could track down some ancient fan fic from the pre-Compilation days (I recall there were a couple good fics by a Princess Artemis, I think. Haven't been able to find them, though), but I'd imagine it'd be awkward re-reading a lot of FF7 fanfic that came before 'Advent Children' and the Compilation in general.

Final Fantasy 8... not so much. I didn't really get very far before Squall and Rinoa annoyed the tar out of me, so I just stopped and have no intention of going back to it.

I'm planning on revisiting the Legacy of Kain series at some point. Gonna have to go the ROM route for Blood Omen (due to Legal Hell involving Crystal Dynamics and Silicon Knights, they can't re-release it on Steam or GOG), but I'm hoping Soul Reaver 1 + 2 and Defiance will have held up. (I won't go anywhere near what remains of the fandom, because uh, it's awkward for me 'cause I was an annoying little snot in it back in the day, ahaha)

And F-Zero GX is still as frustratingly fun as I remember, but boy, some of the character designs just do not hold up 11+ years later. The soundtrack is still one of my all-time favorite video game OSTs, though.

Aw, I have such a soft spot for FF8! It's definitely cheese factor 20, and certainly lacking a bit in relationship development, but I'm very fond of the characters. Even Squall and Rinoa, for all their glaring flaws, though I know that's not exactly a popular opinion.

Even more so, though, I'm in love with the world itself. It just feels so rich and alive to me.

Honestly, I love the supporting cast of FF8 most of all, so my feelings are sort of like secret #10 today. It's an incredibly interesting world, I love some of the concepts (the Guardian Forces could have been expanded upon a lot more, imo. Maybe a little bit more lore about the Sorceresses, too), and I think it has great, if underutilized potential.

What kills me is that, before they settled on using Vincent Valentine and made 'Dirge of Cerberus', we almost got a game centered around Irvine Kinneas... considering Irvine is my favorite character in the game, learning that gutted me, ahaha. Alas!

I've been joke watching CSI Miami because after the stress of the last few weeks I needed something amusing to do. And, let me tell you, so much more fun to crack watch this show than to seriously watch it.

I like to go look at fic for my older pairings sometimes when I'm in a mood for them, DBZ being the most common but I've also had spates of going looking for Mummy fic and some of my older comic book ships.

The fic might not always be that good but I still think it's fun and it gives me something different to read for a change as well.

Have you found good Mummy fic? I remember looking for some AGES ago, but most of it was crap...

Man, nothing that I would have remembered to bookmark since I often have to roam all over the place to find any fic(Ao3 has a few and ff.net has more but it never had much fic in the first place really).

And this is just shippy fic, I don't know how much GEN the fandom has or if it's any good.

I've been doing nothing but that for the past year or so by playing tons of old FPS games.

Some have held up. Others have not.

What!! I've been thinking about replaying Wild Arms too. WA3, specifically--I haven't played the others but I bought 1+2 to play before I got around to the third. Glad to hear it'll be great!!!

Yeah, replaying a few old games off and on. Namely Crusader Kinds 2, Mount and Blade: Warband and starting Skyrim again.

I've started re-watching the first Sailor Moon anime. It's holding up better than I expected. Though Rei used to be my favorite of the inner senshi, and I'm honestly trying to figure out why.

I'm just now getting to the episode where Chibiusa shows up, which means Mamoru is going to breakup with Usagi soon. There are no words to describe just how much I still hate that plot line. I'm not sure if I'm actually going to be able to watch the whole way through, or if I'm going to have to skip several episodes to keep from breaking something.

Link's Awakening holds up every time I play it. The Nightmares and their vague-ery make for my favourite theme of a Zelda villain.

Played Day of the Tentacle again not long ago too. If I hadn't grown up playing what are frustrating adventure games today, I bet I still would have played it just for the writing. Still. Funny.

Oh yeah, I reread Legal Drug to see why on Earth I was so hyped for that disappointing continuation (Drug & Drop). It's enjoyable. I loved it at the time for being a shameless slash teasing CLAMP comic, and the last arc is my favourite of them. But totally an "it was good for the phase I was in at the time" thing.

Kinda want to go back to Runescape nowadays, especially since they revived Old School Runescape without all the graphical updates. I used to have sooo much fun adventuring on that when I was younger.

I'm watching Friends and X-Files on Netflix. I was part of the X-Files fandom back in the day.

All the time.

Been rereading some Chesterton recently and it holds up just as well as it always have - the same problems, but also the same enjoyment.
