Side note but I had a dentist telling me I should get my teeth whitened because it might turn off potential boyfriends? It's a completely cosmetic stain I've had since I was young. He also suggested braces also for cosmetic. My teeth are completely fine and healthy otherwise. Sigh.

It hurt my feelings a bit but if someone is tithed off by a stain you have to be in my face to see - I think I'll be right thanks.

Didn't go back to that dentist

I don't blame you, I wouldn't want to go to that dentist, either. I think it's unprofessional to make an unsolicited recommendation for teeth whitening and it feels like he's trying to upsell you.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

aren't most braces for cosmetic purposes? I had one that corrected my overbite at the same time but that's fairly rare.

True. Although I think some over bites result in bad chewing or something? Abd making space for future teeth.

I didn't realize it was rare for braces to be used to correct an overbite; that's primarily what mine were for. I was asked if I wanted them when I was pretty young, and I'd just had an extra set of bottom front teeth try to come in, so when the dentist said they'd fix my teeth I thought they meant they'd prevent me from looking like a shark for the rest of my life. Instead it meant 15+ years of expensive torture and infections, and a jawline that doesn't suit the rest of my face, since they put in all this stuff to make it wider. Plus now I think it'd be kind of cool to have a shark jaw; I wouldn't have to worry about cavities since I could just grow new teeth in. Too bad it was only ever the one bottom front set that had extra.

I had braces on and off for approximately eight years in the USA. My mouth was too small for 34 teeth and some were coming in crooked and to top it off, my bite was misaligned. Not only would I have looked weird had I not had teeth extracted and gotten braces, I would've had problems chewing food and pronouncing words. It's not always done for cosmetic reasons, trust me! :)

*I meant for 32 teeth, sorry.

Are they? My bf had braces for years and years and will have to wear a retainer for the rest of his life, and his entire jaw was borked, he had to have surgery so he could breathe through his nose and he also had problems with his jaw locking (he still gets that sometimes). The braces were part of the whole fix. I have no doubt that he'd have a whole wealth of problems now if he hadn't gotten braces. Nothing that would kill him, but it would cause a whole hell of a lot of discomfort.
