You could ask the question, is it because "women need to distance themselves" or because "men are socialized to never get that close in the first place or consider it an option"?

I cannot recall ever being told by a guy that they are too personally invested in a character and they felt like they better back off. I've only ever seen the ones who don't get invested, or the extreme ones who get way too invested but don't feel like they have to back off (but the extreme female fans have this problem too).
