Oh, fake cancer is HUGE. You also get a certain amount of fake AIDS, fake child abuse, fake rape trauma, fake military service, fake PTSD, fake disaster survival... there's a whole world of imaginary shit people want you to feel sorry for them about. And yes, all those things are also actually real, which is WHY IT WORKS.

Attention is a drug.

An old housemate of mine pretended to have about everything under the sun. MS, raised (and abused) in care, bipolar, PTSD, deaf ... sometimes I wonder how we managed to believe all that for a year before she got found out and her poor naive family came and cleared all her stuff out, never to be heard from again, but these people are good at what they do. The amount of research we found in her room afterwards was unbelievable, binders stuffed full of papers and printouts.
