This actually reminds me of civil rights debates.

The people against granting whatever rights (or, you know, actually acknowledging other people are, well, people) always bring up animals - "What are we going to do next, give animals the right to vote?", "If we make this legal, the next thing you know, people will be wanting to marry animals."

And I know it's a derailing tactic, a false slippery-slope argument, and a way to equate women/minorities/LGBT with animals, but it always makes me cringe.
