That's like saying Spaceballs is shit because it's a lot funnier if you've watched Star Wars.
Madoka's a good series, and can be watched on its own. That doesn't mean it's not better if you have the frame of reference for it.

You do know the vibe your original comment gave is more along the line of "Spaceballs is deep and not funny if you don't know what it parodies. Why would anyone tell you to watch it if you don't know sci-fi movies?" Like what is wordplay and more like a gateway to Mel Brooks?

I get what you're saying though. It's great to have that background knowledge, to know what is being subverted and deconstructed. It's a bonus if the thing is good to begin with. That said, I love Madoka, but it's as deconstructive of magical girls as NGE is of mecha at the time. Ymmv etc.

A more comparable thing would be to say, a friend of mine has never watched a single science fiction movie ever and somebody recced them Spaceballs to start with.
When the OP specified they were into macabre, the recommendation makes a lot more sense, actually.
