There is a staggering tendency amongst some people to see the world in binary.Pity for them there's more to it than that.

You might see the CIA as more definitely evil if you or your relatives had been tortured by them.

Ditto Republicans, Tories, the Soviet Union, or whomever else.

Re: slightly off-topic

And the CIA, Republican, Tories, and the Soviet Union have also doubtlessly done good things as well.

Look at the Soviet Union: did somethings that were EVIL AS HELL. But Hitler couldn't have been stopped without them.

There's good and evil in basically everything. Some might lean HEAVILY towards one pole but to describe anything as PURE EVIL seems silly to me.

DA

The Tories really, really haven't. Not in during the last government at least.

Also I'm pretty sure Hitler was pure evil. I'd be happy calling Nazis evil in general, even though I'm sure there were some individuals who were brainwashed or deluded.

I'd disagree that Hitler was pure evil, actually. The man did love his dog. He did many despicable things, but he was still human.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. A human being, who was evil.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Evil, maybe, but "pure" evil? Ehh...how can we honestly decide if someone is "pure" evil or "pure" good?

Re: DA

It's ridiculously easy to get people to spout views that sound a lot like his, though. There's been people on FS who've said they think it'd be acceptable to sterilize entire groups and kill off others. It's rationalized as, "they're stupid," "they do all these bad things," "they're hateful and we'd be better off without them." It's out group, in group stuff, and a lot of times, even though people will see how it's wrong when someone's talking about a group that they like or that they don't think deserves poor treatment, they won't see how it's wrong when it's about a group they don't like or think deserves poor treatment. They're blinded by the fact they think they're fundamentally good people and they think they're rational.

That's why breaking the world down into simple categories like good and evil isn't a wise thing to do. It gives people the change to see themselves as good even when they're doing terrible things.

NAYRT

That's one view. I'd say people who want to sterilize all people of any group are evil, though.

I wouldn't say they should be sterilized for it. Just that they're evil and can fuck off.

I have to wonder where you draw the line, and if you are okay with other people drawing the line in other places. Because at some point, it's not functional to say "everyone who does X is evil and therefore can fuck off" because there won't be anybody left.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Being human doesn't stop someone being evil. I'm not sure a non-human can in fact be evil, it wouldn't make any sense.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an open question, but some would certainly argue a sentient rational non-human being could be evil.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well true, but they're hypothetical (so far - we don't know if whales etc count, certainly can't understand or communicate with them if they do).

A tiger isn't evil, though, and neither is someone suffering a psychotic break (as you suggest with "rational"). Hitler's another matter.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure sure.

But I'd like to repeat that it is very much an open question.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
What does a person have to do to be considered "evil"? Who gets to decide if someone is evil or not?

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Current Tories are Evil with a capital Eve. Which also makes you ill. Especially if you were already ill or disabled, in which case you may as well hang yourself if they get another five years.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And you'd still be incorrect.

Do they have evil practices? Yes. Are there evil people who are a part of the organization? Yes. Is every single person who is in any way affiliated with them evil? No.

Especially when you're talking about an intelligence agency, where information is so incredibly compartmentalized that the vast majority of people working there don't have the first clue what anyone outside of their own particular task group might be doing, let alone how they're doing it.

Re: slightly off-topic

NAYRT

God forbid people do the briefest of research about an organization like the CIA before joining it.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people probably have. And, being reasonable human beings capable of seeing shades beyond black and white, have decided that it is not, in fact, a vile cult dedicated to sacrificing babies to the Great Old Ones, and that it might be possible to employ one's skills ethically and perhaps even - gasp, shock - make a push for greater accountability.

It's almost as though given the same information, not everyone would draw identical conclusions.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's almost as if some people are so naive they wake up every morning expecting pigs to fly.

Especially if there's a decent enough paycheck involved.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
People who see the world in black and white often are than naive, you're right.

Re: slightly off-topic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Not a lot more black and white than whether it's ethical to torture people in an attempt to brainwash them, tbh, or teach military dictatorships how to torture most efficiently.

That just circles back to square one though - pointing out that the CIA does evil things. We all know this, the debate is about whether it's possible to do good in a different capacity within the organization, or at least not be an evil person if you're part of it.

And, really, if you're the sort of person who thinks anyone who is in any way affiliated with something evil is automatically 100% tainted and ruined by association, you might as well just give up on humanity because WE ALL, ALL OF US in the Western world support evil things with our money and actions. We can choose to accept it, or we can choose to fight it, or we can choose to live in the woods like a hermit because that's about the only way to completely avoid those kinds of associations.
