If you've got the job of editing their writing, you'd better be pointing out their typos/grammar.

sure, but most people aren't in that position, so it comes off as condescending in pretty much any other circumstance

(though correcting pompous grammar nerds about their mistakes is always apt)

This. I am also dismayed at how pervasive spelling errors and typos are becoming in official media. Oh well, I suppose I can hope the schools are still teaching arithmetic, even if they aren't focusing on reading and writing any more.
