Steve's not as easy to manipulate as all that, I don't think. He's a pretty smart guy.

It's not necessarily about intelligence so much as it is about emotional blackmail. Plus, I can see the US government arguing that Steve OWES them because they gave him his body through the serum. That he has a responsibility to the people of the United States due to the threat posed by the Soviet Union.

I don't think those are very good arguments and it's difficult for me to see Steve giving credence to them.

You think Steve Rogers is going to get caught up in some Red Scare bullshit?

"You think Steve Rogers is going to get caught up in some Red Scare bullshit?"

I don't think that Steve, personally, would ever hate/fear the Soviets. But I do think that the argument that he would need to stay in active service and be a rallying symbol for the people to look towards would be a persuasive argument.

And when the Korean War broke out (because I do imagine it occurs in the Marvel Universe), I don't think Steve would sit on the sidelines.

Don't forget that the Korean War broke out in 1950. World War II ended only 5 years earlier.

And he'd stay in the military between 1945 and 1950 because?

I don't think Steve would agree with the idea that he was morally required to stay in the military indefinitely.

I agree that Steve wouldn't necessarily want to stay indefinitely, but I think post-WWII was still a time of immense tensions. There's a reason the US shut the USSR out of the rebuilding of Japan, for instance. And the partitioning of Germany already showed the strain between the two countries.

I think that the military would have made a very good argument that the situation is very unstable and unsure. We basically jumped right into the Cold War and I think the military would have been very unwilling to let Steve dissociate himself from that.

I don't think your reading of the climate of the times is entirely right. I think there were certainly tensions, but I don't think there were enough for anyone to make a compelling argument to Steve that he'd have to stay in uniform. I also think Steve would think that he could do a lot of good outside of uniform.

To be honest it seems a lot more likely to me that Steve himself would be accused of communist affiliations.

OP

I very much doubt this if only because it would be a political/PR nightmare to have Captain America be accused of communist affiliations.

They'd probably watch him, might even suspect. But I really doubt they'd every publicly accuse him of such sympathies.

I didn't say publicly accused, but I absolutely think he'd be investigated.

And it depends on where he was at that moment in time and how much he had or hadn't pissed off the government at that point as to if they went public with it.
