Older OT fans who saw the OT in theaters and/or were fans of Star Wars before the prequels ever came out had a very different experience -- I'm sure the disappointment and dashed expectations were a lot more anger-inducing for them than for fans who got into Star Wars when they already knew, from pop-cultural osmosis, roughly what the prequels were about and that they weren't that good.

So the older fans who got into SW before the prequels came out have a bigger grudge against the prequels on principle -- because they have the memory of that crushing disappointment and having to jettison tons and tons of fanon about Vader's character and general SW backstory, whereas newer fans (like me) are just like "yeah, whatever, so the prequels are meh, who cares?" The frothing hate is irrational and OTT, yes, but sorta understandable.

"The frothing hate is irrational and OTT, yes, but sorta understandable."

It's just that it's been TEN YEARS.

And...okay...I just really hate that they keep shitting on my generation's movies (the PT). I was kid when they were released and yet the conversation is dominated by their (the OT fans) angry bullshit.

And now with the sequel trilogy, they're STILL acting like they're "owed" them because the PT were "failures" and it's such CRAP. They act like the movies belong to them and it drives me bonkers because they talk over everyone else.

Sorry you have to go through that OP. Are there any communities that are prequel-positive that you can join?

I always wonder why people who hate the PT so much spend so much time bashing them. Wouldn't that mean they have to spend more time thinking about the PT, and less time thinking about the movies they actually like?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a few pro-PT sites but they don't really have much discussion and I just feel really shut out of the Episode VII discussion.

I know it's my fault in large part because I like something that's so unpopular but it's just...sometimes I can't help but wish Episode VII wasn't being made. Because with no new movies, it was mostly just the FANS left and the OT fans had largely said their piece about the PT and so we could have some good PT-centric conversation.

But now, with the ST being released, there's constant rehashing about where the PT went wrong and how the ST is going to be SOOO much better. And it's like picking at a wound.

OP, do yourself a huge favor.

Just stay away from sites and forums where these people who upset you so much are.

Seriously. That really works. It's what I do about the things that I love. There's no use in having such thin skin, too. People are going to have opinions and some are going to be strong opinions that are very much against yours. That isn't going to go away, no matter how much you think they should be polite or well mannered or should keep their opinions to themselves for your sake.

I watched the OT when they opened in the theatres. I grew up with them. Yet I prefer the Prequels. However, I find what most OT fans have to say about the Prequels to be interesting and well thought out, not rabid or extreme, and I tend to agree with them. To each their own.

I don't take any of this stuff personally.

Midichlorians. Just the word alone is enough to cause a firestorm of rage to sweep through me.

OT theater person here.

I always headcanoned that high rates of midichlorians were indicative of Force-sensitivity, not the cause of it. Like, midichlorians are attracted to Force-sensitive individuals, so if there's a lot of them there, it's a sign that the person might be really Force-sensitive.

Don't correct me if this theory is incompatible with canon. I'd rather not know. ;)

You're correct, I think.

Midichlorians are the conduits through which the Force is perceived. Life creates it but it's perceived it through the midis who "speak" the will of the Force.

You know they've existed since the 70s, right?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
da

What does this have to do with anything? They weren't in the OT and are stupid. No1curr whether they were invented in the '70s or the '90s.
