(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)Well, he really only turns on SHIELD once Nick Fury's been shot and he's been jumped in the elevator. Those were pretty big hints that something was up.
I don't think that the US government asking him to stay on and serve following WWII, with the USSR taking over large swathes of Eastern Europe, would have been an easy proposition for Steve to turn down.
I think Steve would continue to serve AND argue for Peggy's dignity. But I don't think he would stay out of service because they were giving Peggy a hard time. I think he would try to do right by her and fulfill his "obligations" (as the government would frame it) at the same time.

It would have been foolish of him to kick SHIELD to the curb before trying to find out more info from the inside. Turns out though, SHIELD got to him first before vice versa.
"With all do respect sir, if you want Captain America, you've got to allow Agent Peggy Carter as well."
Would they really turn that down? Would they risk losing Captain America because they didn't want his wife/girlfriend working for them as well? They might try to say no at first, but if he pushed it, I just don't think there's any way they wouldn't allow her on board, whether wanted to or not.
