Given that Patrick wanted to leave, I think it was the only decision that made sense. Derek was never going to actually abandon his wife, and certainly not his kids. The DC thing would never have stuck. That's not who he is.

Also, I'm not exactly that sad because Derek was one of my least favorite characters on the show. I was more sad about Mark's death, even though again Mark would never abandon his child so it had to happen.

Also I was more sad when Callie and Arizona divorced. They, plus Amelia and Owen, are the characters left I care about the most. They better get back together. And some people have been speculating that the plot of this season actually changed when Patrick decided to leave and that Callie and Arizona are going to end up back together sooner than originally planned. I hope so.

I don't watch Grey's, but I honestly think given the fan response (which they had to know would be such), they might as well have just cancelled the show.

Pompeo wants to leave, and at that point they should cancel. And I say this as someone who likes other characters a lot better. But the show can keep running without Dempsey. And while lots of fans are angry, not all of them are, and either way this doesn't mean everyone is going to stop watching.
