"Let" is one thing and they are bullheaded but also women were fired from any kind of government job when they got married, from teaching to military support to spying. Not because of their personal qualities, but because they were married. It wasn't until the late 1960s that this changed. So while I think Peggy certainly would have been doing what was right, she would have had to have been doing it in a very different way - possibly in the UK where some women (such as MI-5 head Stella Rimington) were slowly making their way through the ranks.
