The crying part reminds me of when I was in elementary school, we did Secret Santas one year and on the last day everyone was supposed to give their person something extra nice -- meaning store-bought, a box of candy or a little stuffed animal. But what did I get? A teeny tiny "bookmark" that the girl who had me had cut crookedly out of regular white paper and glued a string on in a loopy pattern. She'd probably made it in one minute that morning while I wasn't looking. Of course I cried. I tried not to, but I couldn't help it. And the teacher took me out of the classroom and gave me the angriest lecture about how rude and selfish I was and how I should appreciate the girl's thought. (What thought? There was no thought in that half-assed present!) And she made me apologize when the girl should've been the one to apologize for not listening to the instructions and leaving me as the only one in the class without a nice gift.
