Yeah, webcomics tend to be hit or miss for me. If they're pale imitations of Penny Arcade or VG Cats (i.e. 'lolsorandom 2edgy4u geek/video game humor'), then I avoid them entirely, though thankfully that particular genre seems to have fallen out of favor, I think...?

The only webcomic I've ever kept up with for any length of time is Whomp, which can be genuinely funny -if a little dark- at times. (Dunno if it counts, but Ava's Demon was another one I'd kept up with for about a year or so. The horrendous pacing issues eventually turned me off from it entirely)

Do people still try to rip off Penny Arcade and VG Cats? I swear people were doing that 10 years ago.

Part of the reason I stopped reading most webcomics was because they all started being "yo I'm in college/video game bad jokes" but that was YEEARRRSSS ago.

To my knowledge, no. At least, not any notable ones. Nowadays, I get the impression a few webcomics are following the storyboard-esque, one panel per page format of Homestuck, or have a hugely strong narrative focus done in traditional comic book panel styles (i.e. Cucumber Quest, Unsounded, Paranatural).

But the PA/VGC (hell, even Ctrl+Alt+Delete, despite how shitty it was/is) trend/formula is one of those that was so prevalent for the longest time, it sort of became synonymous with webcomics, imo.
