Old/new fandom friends

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who's been in fandom long enough that I sometimes wonder if newer fandom friends are older ones - either with some actual rationale or completely theoretically?

I also have a few who disappeared that I'd love to "reunite" with. (There's one I do worry about, as I think she had depression...)

I've been in fandom long enough, but I don't think I've run into the same people under different names. It'd be weird though if I have.

But yeah I had a bunch of friends on this one Neopets Naruto group. And then a bunch in various Harry Potter rp forums. Those I think would have the highest chance of changing usernames between now and then, but also the most unlikely?

And then since then I've been on LJ/DW, and the username change ratio is pretty slow/non-existent.

There's someone I used to know who I think might be the person 'policing' a shipping tag on Tumblr, especially since said shipping tag had an influx of new material after Pokémon ORAS.

They were always known for being kinda militant and nasty to other shippers, so I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they'd ended up there.

By the end of our friendship, I was bitter about how she treated me and a friend, but by now, I wonder how she's getting on.

I've been thinking about reinventing my fandom self for a while now, and I wonder about this sometimes.

I definitely wouldn't be going back to my old fandoms, but if someone from those groups also got into one of my new fandoms... idk. I don't think I'd be that hard to identify, and while I wouldn't actively try to decieve anyone I'd be on edge all the time waiting for them to out me and make it seem more sketchy than it was (though no doubt some people do probably switch names for malicious reasons).

I suppose that falls under whether or not it'd be okay to ask someone if they were So-And-So from Previous Fandom, or just leave them to get on with it because you don't know why they might have felt the need to reinvent in the first place.

Is it always even reinventing, though? I mean, I have a different name for a different fandom, but it just sort of happened that way. There was definitely no thought process to it, and when I realized a friend in that fandom was also in the other one, I outright said "hey it's me!"

But OTOH, now that you mention it I've known people I can see maybe not wanting to be recognized...

AYRT

I suppose it depends on your reasons for the change?

In my case, a very toxic fandom environment virtually destroyed my interest in fandom and creating as a whole, so I want a completely clean break from that whenever I feel like venturing back.

I could also see how people who'd been e.g. hateful/manipulative/wanky in the various fandoms would try to reinvent themselves somewhere else to carry on their activities once they'd been called out, so obviously they wouldn't want to be ID'd again.

If you're just using different names to differentiate between fandoms, much like authors have different pseudonyms for different genres, then I guess it wouldn't be that big a deal because like you say there's no thought process behind it.

I have actually had this happen, though my name didn't change at any point, so it was weird to realize that I'd been talking to this person who knew who I was without knowing who they were.

Eh, if I come across someone whom I vaguely remember from a previous fandom, I don't go up to them and say "Hey, weren't you X in Y fandom?", because even if we may have been on good speaking terms back then (if not friends), chances are enough time has passed since then, that we've become two entirely different people and may not actually get along these days. And most people generally don't like to be spooked like that (or so I've observed), because they may have their own reasons for changing their fandom identity or w/e.

On a similar note, I've found as I've gotten older, I'm less inclined to change my fandom pseudonym. I only did so recently, because I wanted to unify my online presence a little more and to kinda disassociate from some unpleasant memories from a couple fandoms before then.

I haven't wondered if I've friended old friends without realizing it. I don't think that's ever happened.

I have accidentally friended some old fandom enemies/bullies because they'd changed their handles or I'd just plain forgotten them. Kind of put me off making new friends online for a while.

It's never really crossed my mind. That's a pretty interesting thought though. I don't use the same username I did ten years ago, so...

But I do miss and occasionally worry about old fandom friends.

I do sometimes. Especially since I tend to cycle around my fandoms. Like my current main fandom, I was there when it was in its infancy. Left when drama and new fans were at a height. Now I'm back in its post-canon twilight years.

It would actually be kinda neat to run into some of the old crowd again under different pseuds.

I've certainly run into old circles again on new websites. Not many, a small handful. A couple I got to know better, others we figuratively nodded at each other and went our separate ways.
