Re: Worst things on the internet?

I don't know if it's "truly disturbing", but I was reading an article that talked about someone with Down Syndrome in a way some of us felt was patronizing and dehumanizing. As soon as we said it, people stopped being all "aww I'm crying here GOD BLESS HIM" and started calling us heartless assholes.

Then in another article, people were asking why parents mind being asked nosy questions about their disabled kids because "we're just trying to be understanding!"

The fact that people can't grasp that maybe disabled individuals just want to be regarded as human beings really, really bothers me. Especially when they get angry the minute they're told otherwise.

(It also bothers me when parents of disabled children seem to fall for that. I mean, I know it's hard and maybe they need that coping mechanism, but I always wonder how the kids are going to feel when/if they realize their parents are patronizing them.)

Ugh, yeah, no, I know too many disabled folks who came from really fucked up families. That would squick me massively too. (Autistic kids of anti-vaxxer fundies. NUFF SAID.)
