Female Buddy Films

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
- Why are there so few?

- Have movies like Bridesmaids and The Other Woman added to the genre, or have they been bad examples, or a bit of both?

- What are some good female buddy films?

1. I don't know about filmmakers, but I have friends who've said overall, they find friendship (male or female or male-female) harder to write. I also think that while IRL male friendship is very complex, it's complex in a way that might be easier to show than female friendships.

2. I think both tried and failed, but for different reasons. The Other Woman had a lot of really weird slapstick, and the double standards were just... weird. Plus, the "joke" that the guy became more feminine did not sit well with me. Whereas Bridesmaids felt more like a "female buddies drift apart" film than a female buddy film, and while in fact that IS quite realistic... it didn't work for the intended purpose.

- Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (though the book is better - I'd also caution that in both versions, you do have to accept how royally fucked up the Ya-Yas are, especially Vivie), A League of Their Own (passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors), Now and Then. And... that's pretty much it, honestly.

My problem with Bridesmaids is that it's essentially about female characters working to destroy relationships between other female characters. Which doesn't seem very different from anything else you see about women. Also, that it's the female character who largely isn't responsible for the rift who has to fall on her sword and make it right, as if she's been the one doing everything wrong... I find that obnoxious.

AYRT - Yeah, I had issues with that too. Especially when she called her friend while having something of a borderline panic attack, and the friend didn't call back because "I just got too busy." That's what some friendships are like, I've been in them, but not friendships worth watching an hour and a half long movie about.

Same. I found that movie awful, most of them were horrible people and yadda yadda good ending and all that I still found them all awful!

Thelma & Louise, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Heat, Bound (well, buddies with benefits), Boys On The Side, Living Out Loud... how many more you want?

I think everyone forgets about Now and Then but it's an awesome movie about female friendship and how they grow up.

Thelma & Louise?

Probably because they're seen as chick flicks, which means that the people who make movies don't think men will go see it unless it's under duress.

Thelma and Louise is probably one of the classics. A League of Their Own was also good and still makes me tear up a little.

Uhhh... Charlie's Angels?

The Descent isn't so much a buddy movie so much as it is an AWESOME movie with an all female cast.

Foxfire is a lesbian film more than a female buddy film, but it's still enjoyable.

Spice World? Terrible, but all the Girl Power you could ever need.

I don't care what anyone says, Spice World is a legitimately awesome film and genuinely hilarious as a comedy.

A thing can be awesome and hilarious and still terrible. Spice World falls into that category for me.

But I still kind of love it.

Because it has Seth Green and Alan Cumming in the cast, that's why.

Banditas was not the best movie ever, but it was unquestionably a female buddy movie and it did that pretty well.

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. I was thinking about it earlier today and how it's the only female version of a dumb bromance comedy that I'm aware of.

I was coming here to say this! Romy and Michele is legit one of my favorite dumb feel-good comedy flicks.

See The Heat.

The Other Woman was kind of messed up. It's like they kept trying to play to a male audience even though it's supposedly from a female point of view, and it fit together strangely.

- Because it's not something that movie producers find profitable, I guess?

- Haven't seen The Other Woman, but Bridesmaids didn't feel like a buddy comedy and more about a woman dealing with her unacomplished life and depression. It had funny moments but in the end friendship takes the backseat.

- Urm, this is hard because they are really, really rare. Wasn't there a movie with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey? Haven't seen it but I guess it counts. Oh and Thelma and Louis, even if it's not exactly a comedy. Also there was a movie about three divorced woman (or at least one was getting a divorce, the other was an alcoholic and unacomplished actress and the third one was a wife/mom) who drifted away, but got together after one of their best friend's commited suicide (can't remember why) to make their own company. I saw it a long time ago, but I remember enjoying it quite a lot.
