This sounds exactly like something I'd do, except that I haven't had the nerve to write and send the letter.

IDGI. I don't understand what there is to be nervous about or afraid of. I can understand how it's hard to know exactly what you want to write, but not why it takes nerve.

People are different and have different feelings. What makes you nervous won't necessarily make me nervous, and what makes me nervous won't necessarily make you nervous. If you can grasp the concept that one person might like spinach while another person doesn't like it at all, then actually yes, you can understand why writing a letter to someone you greatly admire might require some nerve for some people.

But the way you phrased this makes me think that your problem isn't a matter of comprehension, it's a lack of empathy for other people who feel differently about a thing than you do. Please reconsider this approach.

DA

I'm not seeing what ayrt said wrong. They didn't say there was anything wrong with it,, they said they didn't understand it. You seem to be projecting a lot of judgment on to them when you could presumably explain what about it takes nerve instead?

I guess I'm highly skeptical about people who claim they "don't understand" why people think or react differently than they do. It's a very common thing that happens every day, to every single person on this planet. If you have any contact with other human beings, you experience it to such a frequency that I find it difficult to believe anyone who says they don't grasp the phenomenon.

But nevertheless, I wasn't rude about it to the anon. I simply laid out why it's not uncommon and asked them to reconsider treating the situation as if it's somehow dysfunctional to find a person who reacts differently to a situation than they would react.

Holy overreaction, Batman.

My main concern was that the person I was sending the letter to would find it annoying or creepy, to be honest. I felt like I was bothering them by sending them the letter. Now, I know that doesn't make a lot of sense (there really was nothing creepy in what I wrote), and, if I'm being rational I'm almost certain it would be rather nice to be on a receiving end of such a letter. But still, I kept wondering if my wording was right enough, have I been complimenting them too much, did I sound like an idiot, etc etc etc. All of those things I've been stressing about made me send the letter without signing it with anything but my first name.
