When I first got into fandom, it was expected and in a lot of places required that you warn for any same sex content. Not sex. Not porn. Any. Same. Sex. Content.
We're talking holding hands, saying "I love you," going on a date.
For a long time, it was just accepted that this was how things were, because exposing somebody to queer content, no matter how mild, was ~~~HORRIBLE~~~ and ~~~TRAUMATIC~~~ and of COURSE hetero people got upset when they accidentally read about non-hetero people, or even hetero people who happened to have a single exception. (We're Not Gay, We Just Love Each Other was a really common trope, because of course why would anybody want their favorite characters to actually be one of Those Icky Gays.)
Which made it kind of suck to be both fannish and queer.
It's only been within the last ten ten or so years that the fandom as a whole has (mostly) gotten on board with the fact that warning for the mere presence of LGBT people is actually kind of homophobic.
