People I've followed seem to be pretty high on s8. But that's admittedly just one slice of fandom.

For me, personally... I almost feel guilty, but I hated it. I don't hate Moffat (I don't love him either, but he's certainly capable of making Who that I love), and I love Capaldi, but the season was a huge turn-off for me. I really do feel guilty because I think there's enough haters out there and I feel bad for the fans and I want to support them, but the combination of the way the Doctor & companion dynamics storyline played out, and the general aesthetic choices and the style of storytelling in the season, just completely didn't work for me and made the show actively unpleasant to watch.

Yes Capaldi is awesome and I really got into his Doctor. For the first time in years I'm having repeated viewings of the episodes again.

I'm glad he's sticking around for a while too. I kind of hope a new showrunner comes in during his run (not trying to turn your secret into Moffat hate, I just think the show could use a a fresh start, Capaldi helped with that a bit but we could still use some different writing.)

I think the season still had plenty flaws, but oi liked they radically chose another kind of Doctor. And I really like Capaldi as an actor.

I want to like Capaldi. I truly, truly do, but after the first few episodes, I just couldn't stand his Doctor anymore...

Image: the “movie posters” for Doctor Who S8

Text: Series 8 was, alongside Series 5, my favourite series of New!Who. I loved Matt to bits and I cried when he left, but Capaldi made me enjoy th show again. For the first time in years, I cannot wait for the new series to begin.

Secret because almost everyone seems to hate Moffat these days.

Those are beautiful posters.

Same, OP. I have rewatched S8 a lot and it also made my friends give the series a go, finally. Capaldi is a fantastic Doctor and I also came to like Clara, whom I abhorred with Matt Smith. The majority of the episodes from this series were very strong and I am so excited for the new series. (Also, the ones I liked best were not written by Moffat, incidentally, although I'm not on the hating Moffat wagon.)

Also those posters are simply stunning. Where are they from?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I never full on hated Clara but man she was a completely different character with 12 then with 11. She actually gained a personality and a life that she really seemed to lack in her brief time with Matt.

I think Capaldi and Coleman play off each other well and that helps.

The posters are by Stuart Manning, commissioned by RadioTimes: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2014-12-01/doctor-who-radio-times-retro-poster-collection-goes-on-sale

I love the composition of this secret! So pretty. :-)

It really is. What gorgeous posters too.

As for the secret itself, I liked some of this season and disliked other bits. (Which is pretty par for the course with me and Who.)

Capaldi is a fantastic actor (and an incredibly charismatic man) and I think he makes an interesting doctor, but I wouldn't personally go as far as to say I like him more than Matt (or Tennant). They're very different doctors.

...yeah, still not watching till Moffat is done like dinner.

Despite the pretty weak, incredibly fanfic, ending, season 8 was one of the best seasons of NuWho. It did attract a hell of a lot of snobbery from the usual muppets though. Some drama kings really went out of their way to concoct hate on it. Especially Kill the Moon which was a very nice 1970s style of story that would have fit in perfectly with the mid-Pertwee era. I do think the season ender let it down though, and that Moffat should really start looking to parachute out, not for social justice reasons, but because he's being indulgent in the sort of way Tom Baker tried to be but was prevented from being in series season 18.

I actually thought "Kill the Moon" was the weakest story, up until the final two-parter.

The first time through was interesting, a lot of emotional intensity, but the whole "the creature flies away and leaves a moon that is EXACTLY like the old moon that it supposedly hatched from" ending was just ridiculous.

I realize they needed to create a rift between Clara and the Doctor, but couldn't they have created a story that didn't have a literal moon-sized plot hole to do it with?

I'd like a change of showrunner. I like Capaldi, and I'd love to see what his Doctor is like without Moffatt.

Sorry but having the Doctor be pissy over the movies Aliens, blame humans for people trying to kill them on a movie he would have known about a long fucking time ago, and telling a SMALL CHILD that she was not special...that isn't the fucking Doctor. I don't know how Moffat is writing but it isn't the Doctor. And I'm sick of the manic pixie dream companions.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
That "Alien" thing was a gag, i.e. something knowingly silly that you're meant to find amusing. It speaks volumes about your mindset that you took it as some serious evidence of the Doctor's moral outlook.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Jeez, way to miss the joke, anon. It wasn't meant to be serious, it was just something thrown in to make the audience giggle. Also, Courtney doesn't count as a 'small child' -- child, yes, but certainly not a small one. As for why the Doctor told her she wasn't special, that's probably because he was a bit less tactfull than he used to be. He does say plenty of inappropriate things, I guess that's just a part of who he is at the moment.

To be honest, I much more prefer this Doctor to the one who kept apologizing and crying and moaning constantly, as much as I did love Ten it was just a little too much sometimes.

RTD fanboy/fangirl detected.

Seriously, I loved a lot of RTD's era, but I like what's Moffat done with the show as well. I enjoyed S8 a lot and think Twelve is a fabulous Doctor. I do think it may be Moffat's time to go, though, just like RTD left in the nick of time, imho.

As for manic pixie dream companions...I'd have any of those any day rather than Rose (I loved her with Nine, but she annoyed me the rest of the show).

The show has hit a quite wonderful resurgence of creativity and attitude, and S9 is sounding even more interesting (I'm fucking hyped for all these two-parters/linked episodes and Michelle Gomez again, also Capaldi's new look from filming pics is so 'uncool' it loops back around to 100% badass.)

But some advice; anywhere you feel you have to keep "I am actually enjoying the current run of Doctor Who" a secret, is somewhere you should probably start distancing yourself from.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I want Michelle Gomez to take a sports car around the Nevsehir province of Turkey.

Series 8 is my favorite series of the reboot and Capaldi is my doctor, thank you for making my day with this secret!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't get it. I've had issues with the show for a while, but series 8 has been BY FAR the weakest of the new show. I mean by leaps and bounds. It was so bad I'm really thinking of giving up. And I'm one of the crazies, the show is my life and whatnot. Or was. It's that bad. And I love Peter Capaldi, fwiw. But my god, the show has become such shit. Makes me so sad.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm see that might be your problem though, you loved the show and s8 was a change of pace what with the darker tone and interesting character development (I adore Clara and Twelve's dynamic too) For me it was great because while I've caught a few random series over the years, I really hadn't *cared* about the show since Nine regenerated.
