Vampires have a kind of timeless appeal, with tried and tested themes and asthetics which will always be relevant so they're always going to come first.

Correct tier is

Vampire > Werewolves > Ghosts > Zombies

DA

I'd say that's always going to be personal matter. They all spring from different fears, so different people will always have different ones they're more repulsed by/drawn to. Zombies are the fear of disease/decay/being trapped, vampires are the fears of sex/power/rape/predation, werewolves are the fear of loss of self/loss of control/base instinct, ghosts are the fear of the nothing after death/old sins being brought to life.

Vampires are usually popular because most of the things they're a fear of also have an allure, I think, but if those aren't the kind of things you want to see explored it's easy to burn out on them. There's not an awful lot of variation in the kinds of stories that have vampires in (and a lot of the ones that go further afield end up treading close to other monsters - I've seen several versions of vampires that are basically zombies by another name), or at least it can seem that way when they're not what holds your interest anymore.

Personally, I'd like to see more werewolf and ghost stories - I'm burned out on vamps and I've never liked zombies at all, and while there aren't a lot of new ghost stories, I think werewolves have a lot of untapped potential left. So my personal tier would be werewolves > ghosts > vampires > zombies.

You could say that about any of those monsters.

Matter of fact, if we're going strictly by age, I'm pretty sure ghost stories would come first.

Zombies who are just wrapped up and run off magic.

I admit, vampires are an even HARDER sell for me than zombies. Now that I've read half of Fat White Vampire Blues, I'd be more than happy to never read another vamp story again.
